Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Borrowed ResortBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Vance Global Tower in downtown Charlotte was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark suits guarded every corridor. Inside the private executive study, I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing a plush wool sweater provided by staff, holding a mug of hot chamomile tea.

Across the broad black granite conference table sat Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, Marcus Vance, and two federal forensic accounting experts.

Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers, wiretap logs, and real estate charters flat onto the granite table before Marcus and me:

"Maddie, Marcus," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Bradley Vance, Barbara Vance, and the Vance Family Trust Fraud is complete."

I leaned over the granite table, my hands planted flat against the polished surface, my dark hazel eyes burning with an apocalyptic, predatory fire. "Explain it to us, Bridget."

Bridget tapped the digital displays:

THE ONE-HUNDRED-TWENTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Certified banking registries proving Bradley Vance and his mother, Barbara Vance, systematically diverted $120 million over five years from Maddie’s late father’s estate—The Bennett Maritime Trust—into offshore shell accounts co-owned by Bradley’s brother, Michael Vance.

THE FORGED COMMUNITY PROPERTY DEED: Intercepted wiretaps proving Bradley attempted to transfer the title of Maddie’s $15 million oceanfront estate in Asheville into a private family trust to shield it from divorce proceedings.

THE SOVEREIGN BLOODLINE CHARTER: Original probate deeds confirming thirty-four-year-old Donna Maddie Bennett-Vance as sole sixty percent controlling common equity holder over the entire Vance-Bennett Maritime Network—making her Bradley's ultimate corporate superior.

My jaw locked into unyielding granite.

"They shoved me into a freezing pool to humiliate me," I rasped out, my voice an iron blade that vibrated through the quiet room. "While they were living off my late father's legacy and plotting to steal my home."

Marcus Vance walked around the granite table, dropping flat onto one knee right in front of my chair.

The broad, powerful security director reached out, taking my small, cold hands into his broad, calloused palms, looking into my eyes with pure, unshakeable reverence and diamond-hard protective resolve.

"They built their arrogance on your patience, Maddie," Marcus swore, his deep voice shaking the room. "Tomorrow morning at the North Carolina Maritime Assembly... we show them who rules this empire."
