Chapter 2 - The Audit of the ShadowBy 2:00 PM, the suite was filled with a team of top financial litigators led by Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International.

I sat in a velvet armchair, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea, while Bridget slid three thick leather binders across the granite table toward Gideon and me.

"Vivian, my dear," Bridget spoke with cold, clinical satisfaction. "Your husband’s arrogant greed has made this surprisingly simple. Preston believed that because you spent three years in rehabilitation centers, you would never audit the family books."

"What did you find, Bridget?" I asked softly.

"Everything," Bridget declared, tapping the ledgers:

EMBEZZLEMENT: Over the last three years, Preston and Cassidy Vaughn embezzled $4.2 million from your grandfather’s land trust to buy a penthouse in South Brooklyn registered under Cassidy’s maiden name.

THE EQUITY PROXY: The proxy deed Preston forged while you were in the ICU is legally void under federal fraud statutes because the notary stamp was purchased from a company owned by Cassidy’s brother.

THE BILLIONAIRE'S BACKING: Gideon Ashford has quietly purchased sixty percent of the institutional debt of Vance Global Capital.

I turned my head to look at Gideon, who was standing quietly near the coffee station, pouring himself a fresh cup of dark roast.

"Gideon... why?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "You could have bought Preston's firm without helping me. Why are you doing all of this?"

Gideon set his cup down flat on the saucer with a quiet click. He walked over, standing beside my chair, his tall frame casting a protective shadow over me.

"Five years ago, Vivian," Gideon revealed softly, his storm-gray eyes locking onto mine with an absolute, unshakeable truth, "I was in that burning building."

My breath caught sharply in my throat. "What...?"

"I was on the third floor attending a private investor meeting when the explosion happened," Gideon spoke, his voice low and solemn. "I watched through the smoke as a brave young woman threw herself over a collapsed beam, burning her own back to pull a man out into the alley."

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing against my shoulder, his touch laced with an ancient, profound reverence.

"I thought that man was a hero who would spend his life worshipping the woman who saved him," Gideon whispered. "Instead, I found out years later that he was a coward who hid behind your sacrifice. I promised myself that the day you saw him for what he truly was, I would stand beside you and give you back your throne."

A warm, weightless relief washed over my soul. The shame I had carried for five years—the toxic belief that my body was repulsive—shattered into dust forever.

"Then let's give New York a show, Don Gideon," I smiled softly.
