Chapter 4 - The Insolvency of Ethan CaldwellThe atmosphere inside the Grand Meridian ballroom transformed from a celebration into an absolute, unadulterated execution.

Vanessa stood frozen on the stage, her red-nailed fingers trembling violently as she backed away from Ethan, her face contorted in a wild mixture of horror, shame, and immediate self-preservation.
“Ethan...” Vanessa whimpered, her voice shaking. “You... you told me the company was yours! You told me you owned forty percent of the equity!”
“He owns zero percent, Miss Pierce,” Arthur Sterling’s voice boomed down from the screen above. “Under Section 12 of the Vanguard Investment Agreement, all executive stock options granted to Ethan Caldwell were held in conditional escrow, subject to continuous marital fidelity and ethical compliance clauses.”
Vanessa’s head snapped toward the screen. “What?!”
“Furthermore,” Arthur continued smoothly, flipping a page in his binder, “our forensic accounting team completed a twelve-month audit of Mr. Caldwell’s executive expense accounts three hours ago.”
Arthur pressed a button on his desk, projecting a second document onto the giant screen:
[FORENSIC AUDIT REPORT: $1.4M UNAUTHORIZED EMBEZZLEMENT — LEASED PENTHOUSE IN RIVER NORTH, LUXURY JEWELRY, AND OFFSHORE WIRE TRANSFERS TO VANESSA PIERCE.]
A collective gasp exploded across the room.
The board members jumped up from their chairs, shouting in wild fury:
“He embezzled corporate funds?!”
“He used Vanguard credit for his mistress?!”
“Cancel his contract! Arrest him!”
Vanessa let out a horrified, shrieking gasp, throwing her leather clutch flat against Ethan’s chest. “You lied to me! You told me those transfers were authorized bonuses! You dragged me into your embezzlement!”
“Vanessa! Wait!” Ethan sobbed, crawling across the wooden stage floorboards toward her, his three-thousand-dollar suit ruined, coated in spilled champagne and fallen confetti. “I did it for us! I did it for our future!”
Vanessa turned on her heel, her high heels clicking frantically as she sprinted off the stage, pushing past the crowd of investors, fleeing through the emergency exit doors into the night.
Ethan lay on the stage steps, clutching his chest, weeping like a broken, pathetic child while two hundred people he had tried to impress looked down at him with pure, unadulterated disgust.
I stood at the foot of the stage, my hand resting gently over my baby bump, watching my husband’s empire dissolve into ash.
“Arthur,” I spoke quietly into my phone headset.
“Yes, Chairwoman?” Arthur replied.

“Execute the immediate foreclosure on the River North penthouse, freeze his private accounts, and hand the embezzlement file directly to the District Attorney.”
“Understood, Chairwoman,” Arthur confirmed. “The police units are already waiting in the lobby.”
