Chapter 2 - The Unsealing of the LedgerA collective, sharp gasp rippled across the two hundred guests packed inside the Grand Meridian ballroom.

The vice president of sales dropped his fork against his porcelain plate with a loud CLACK. Board members pushed back their chairs, their faces turning from smug amusement into pale, horrified confusion as they stared at the flashing crimson text.
Ethan’s face went dead, paper-white.
The microphone in his hand began to tremble slightly, a high-pitched feedback whistle whining through the speakers as his grip loosened.
“What... what is this?” Ethan stammered, his eyes darting frantically from the giant screen to his executive assistant standing near the stage stairs. “Who authorized a system override?! Is this a joke?!”
Vanessa took an involuntary half-step back, her red-nailed fingers slipping off his suit sleeve. “Ethan... what’s Vanguard Capital? You said you were being appointed by the regional board!”
Before Ethan could answer, the crimson header on the screen dissolved, revealing a live video stream from the executive conference room on the top floor of Vanguard’s headquarters downtown.
Sitting at the head of a mahogany conference table was Arthur Sterling—sixty-five years old, wearing a immaculate dark charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed back, his sharp blue eyes looking through the camera with the absolute, terrifying authority of a judge reading a death sentence.
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur Sterling’s baritone voice boomed cleanly through the ballroom speakers, cutting through the rising panic like a razor blade.
Ethan stepped to the edge of the stage, shouting up at the screen. “Arthur! What the hell are you doing?! This is my promotion night! I signed the Regional Director contract two hours ago!”
“You signed a draft proposal, Mr. Caldwell,” Arthur corrected smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses, picking up a leather binder from the table. “A proposal that was contingent upon final authorization from the primary shareholder of Vanguard Capital.”
“I have the support of seventy percent of the internal board!” Ethan spat, his charming facade completely cracking into ugly, desperate rage. “Who the hell overrides an internal board vote?!”
Arthur Sterling offered a faint, dry smile that didn't reach his eyes.
“The Chairwoman overrides it, Ethan,” Arthur replied softly.
The ballroom went so quiet you could hear the champagne bubbles popping inside the crystal flutes.
Ethan blinked, his brow furrowing in confusion. “The... the Chairwoman? The anonymous investor? She doesn't interfere in regional personnel! She hasn't attended a physical meeting in three years!”
“She is in attendance tonight, Ethan,” Arthur revealed, his deep voice carrying an icy, weightless finality. “In fact, she has been sitting in your presence for the entire evening.”
Vanessa’s head snapped toward the back of the room. Ethan’s eyes wildly scanned the crowd, skipping over the wealthy heiresses, the female board members, and the senior directors’ wives, before finally stopping at the very back of the hall.

I took three slow, deliberate steps forward, the heels of my orthopedic shoes clicking cleanly against the polished marble floor.
