Chapter 3 - The Threshold of Gold CoastThe heavy oak front door of the Vance brownstone was pulled open by Nathan, revealing Grant standing on the granite porch under the freezing rain.

Grant looked unhinged. His expensive wool coat was soaked through, his dark hair plastered to his forehead, his face flushed red with a terrifying combination of rage, embarrassment, and corporate panic. Behind his SUV parked along the curb, three white news vans with satellite dishes were already idling, their high-intensity halogen lights painting the wet street in blinding white.

"Nathan," Grant spat, trying to step past my brother into the foyer. "Out of my way. I need to see my wife."

Nathan didn't move an inch. Standing six-foot-three, his broad frame completely blocked the entryway.

"You don't have a wife in this house, Grant," Nathan said, his baritone dropping into a quiet, razor-sharp whisper that made the two security guards behind Grant flinch. "You have a plaintiff."

Grant’s jaw worked silently. "Nathan, this is a private family matter! Some internet trolls cut together a fake twenty-second video clip to sabotage Whitmore Enterprises' Q4 valuation! I am here to pick up my daughter and take her home where she belongs!"

"She is home," I said softly, stepping out into the dim light of the foyer behind my brother.

Grant’s eyes snapped to mine. He looked past Nathan, taking in my simple black sweater, my calm, unbothered posture, and the total absence of tears on my face.

"Evelyn!" Grant shouted, his voice cracking with desperate authority. "Tell your brother to step aside! Do you have any idea what is happening out there right now?! The board of directors called an emergency session for eight o'clock tomorrow morning! Our stock dropped nine percent in after-hours trading because of that damn video!"

"Your stock dropped because you abandoned a five-year-old child near an escalator to shoot a fake video with your mistress, Grant," I stated, every word dropping like a lead weight onto the marble floor.

Grant took a deep, ragged breath, trying to summon the old, charming corporate persona he had used to manipulate boardrooms and investors for a decade.

"Evelyn... listen to me," Grant softened his tone, taking a step closer to the threshold, his voice turning into a desperate, purring whisper. "Sloane was a mistake. The campaign was a mistake. I will terminate her contract tonight. I will issue a public statement saying I suffered a momentary medical dizzy spell at the mall, which caused me to lose track of Lily for three minutes. We can save the company. We can save our family."

A soft, cold laugh escaped my lips.

"You didn't suffer a dizzy spell, Grant," I said, pulling a folded white document from my pocket and tossing it flat onto the stone threshold between his wet leather shoes. "I suffered the dizzy spell this morning. Which is why I begged you to watch our daughter."

Grant looked down at the white document resting in the cold rain.

Printed across the top in bold, black legal ink were the words: PETITION FOR IMMEDIATE DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE, EMERGENCY SOLE CUSTODY, AND RESTRAINING ORDER.

Grant stared at the papers, his face draining of every drop of color until he looked like a corpse standing under the streetlights.

"You... you prepared this already?" Grant gasped, looking up at me in absolute horror.

"My legal team prepared it two hours ago while you were on the phone with your public relations firm," Nathan interjected smoothly. "And as of five minutes ago, a judge from the Cook County Family Court signed the emergency temporary custody order. If you step onto this porch again, Grant, you will be arrested for felony violation of a protective order."

Grant stood frozen in the sleet, his hands trembling at his sides, as the three news vans across the street raised their camera booms, flashbulbs exploding through the dark rain, capturing the CEO of Whitmore Enterprises standing locked outside his wife's home.
