Chapter 2 - The Collapse at HeadquartersBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the sun broke over the Chicago skyline, painting the ice-covered streets in crisp, golden light.

Inside the sixty-story glass tower of Moretti Global Holdings in downtown Chicago, absolute, unadulterated chaos had erupted.
The primary trading floor was thick with shouting executives, ringing landlines, and frantic financial analysts.
The news had detonated across Wall Street at 6:00 AM: MORETTI-VANCE MERGER STALLED AS PRIMARY TRUSTEE CLAIRE BENNETT-MORETTI REVOKES CORPORATE PROXIES.
Inside the top-floor executive suite, Vincent Moretti stood behind his massive mahogany desk.
He looked unhinged.
His tailored tuxedo from the previous night was gone, replaced by a rumpled white dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair messy, dark purple shadows carved deep beneath his bloodshot eyes.
On his mahogany desk rested the velvet-lined tray containing my three-carat diamond wedding ring, the signed divorce petition, and my short, handwritten note: I’m done being your wife.
Standing across the desk was Marco—Vincent's chief of security—along with six senior vice presidents of the Moretti conglomerate.
"Where is she?!" Vincent roared, his baritone booming off the high plaster walls, slamming his heavy fist flat against the mahogany wood until the crystal inkwell rattled. "You have sixty security operatives in this city, Marco! How the hell do you not know where my wife spent the night?!"
Marco stood at attention, his face pale, his hands clasped behind his back. "Boss... Mrs. Moretti didn't use her corporate credit cards. She didn't use the family vehicles. She used a private cab service paid for in cash, and her personal cell phone was powered down at eight-fifteen last night. Her location is completely off the grid."
"She is thirty years old! She has no security team! She has no secondary safehouses!" Vincent shrieked, taking three frantic strides across the plush rug, grabbing his dark hair with both hands. "Find her! Check every hotel in the Loop! Check the airport private hangars!"
"Vincent..." his chief financial officer, David, spoke up nervously, holding a trembling iPad. "We have a much larger problem."
Vincent spun around, his gray eyes burning with wild, lethal fury. "What problem?!"
"The Bennett Family Trust," David revealed, his voice shaking. "We always assumed the Bennett Trust was just a passive holding account your late father-in-law set up for Claire's personal allowance."
"It is an allowance account!" Vincent barked.
"No, sir... it isn't," David corrected, handing the iPad across the desk. "Claire reactivated the trust’s primary enforcement clause at seven o'clock this morning. The Bennett Trust doesn't just hold her personal inheritance... it holds forty-one percent of the underlying equity in our primary shipping terminals along the Chicago River."
Vincent froze. The air in his lungs vanished in a single, catastrophic second.
"What did you say?" Vincent rasped out, his voice dropping into a terrifying whisper.
"Before you married Claire seven years ago," David explained softly, "your father borrowed twenty million dollars from Claire's late mother to buy out the Irish syndicate at Pier 4. The collateral for that loan was forty-one percent of Moretti Logistics. Claire just executed a default recall."
Vincent stared at the screen, his chest heaving in shallow, panicked gasps as the world he thought he had mastered dissolved into absolute ruin.

The woman he had left standing in the freezing rain—the woman he had dismissed as a quiet, dutiful wife who merely managed his schedules—had been holding his empire by the throat for seven years.
And she had just pulled the trigger.
