Chapter 4 - The Empty StageAt 11:15 AM, Nathan Whitmore glided through the automatic glass doors of the Briarwood Regional Medical Center’s fourth-floor maternity wing.

He wore a custom navy blue blazer, white trousers, and a gleaming Rolex on his wrist. Beside him walked Todd Keller, a freelance photographer he had hired to take "spontaneous" photos of him tenderly holding his newborn daughters for a planned profile in Columbus Business Monthly.

Nathan carried three giant plush teddy bears under one arm and a massive arrangement of two dozen long-stemmed pink roses in the other.

"Remember, Todd," Nathan instructed in a low, polished voice as they approached the nurses' station. "Get the shots from the side. Make sure the lighting catches the tears in my eyes when I look at the incubators. We'll run the headline: 'Local Titan Nathan Whitmore Balances Multi-Million Dollar Developments with Triplet Miracle.'"

"Got it, Mr. Whitmore," the photographer nodded, adjusting his camera lens.

Nathan walked up to the central desk with his trademark, dazzling smile—the smile that had convinced dozens of commercial investors to hand over millions.

"Good morning, ladies!" Nathan announced warmly, setting the roses onto the counter. "I'm Nathan Whitmore. I'm here to see my wife, Caroline Whitmore, and my three newborn daughters."

The head floor nurse, Nurse Karen—a veteran who had worked alongside Hannah Pierce during my emergency C-section—slowly looked up from her computer terminal. Her expression was flat, cold, and entirely unamused.

"Mr. Whitmore," Karen said deadpan. "There is no patient named Caroline Whitmore on this floor."

Nathan chuckled, waving his hand dismissively. "Oh, come on, Karen. I know she's in room 412. I had her admitted on Thursday. She was having some minor pregnancy drama. Did she get moved to a private suite?"

"Mrs. Whitmore was discharged at 9:00 AM this morning, Mr. Whitmore," Karen reported, her voice echoing clearly across the quiet hallway. "And her room was cleared."

Nathan’s smile hitched. A flicker of irritation crossed his handsome face. "Discharged? What are you talking about? She was twenty-nine weeks pregnant with triplets! She couldn't have been discharged!"

"She wasn't discharged pregnant, Mr. Whitmore," Karen stated, looking directly into his eyes with absolute disgust. "Mrs. Whitmore underwent an emergency C-section four days ago, on Thursday afternoon at 2:15 PM. She delivered three baby girls."

Nathan froze. The three massive teddy bears slipped from his arm, tumbling flat onto the linoleum floor.

"S-she... delivered...?" Nathan stammered, every drop of color draining from his face until he looked like paper. "Four days ago?! Why wasn't I called?!"

"You were called, Mr. Whitmore," Karen answered coldly, pulling up an official medical log on her screen. "Nurse Hannah Pierce placed a call to your personal mobile at 1:58 PM on Thursday. You placed the call on speakerphone. You informed the medical staff that your wife was 'exaggerating again,' refused to leave your lunch at the country club with Miss Vanessa Brooks, and hung up."

The photographer, Todd, gasped, slowly lowering his camera, staring at Nathan in absolute, stunned horror.

Nathan’s jaw sagged open. Sweat broke out along his forehead. "No... no, that's a misunderstanding! I was... I was in an important business meeting! Where are my daughters?! Take me to the NICU right now!"

"Your daughters are no longer at this facility, Mr. Whitmore," Karen revealed with a cold, triumphant smile. "Under the direction of Mrs. Whitmore and her legal counsel, the infants were transferred via private medical transport to the Cleveland Clinic two hours ago."

"WHAT?!" Nathan roared, slamming his hands onto the desk. "She can't move my children without my consent! I'm their father!"

Standing near the hallway elevators, stepping out from the shadows in an immaculate dark suit, was Edward Croft—my father’s senior partner.

"You were their father, Mr. Whitmore," Edward spoke smoothly, stepping forward and handing a thick stack of legal documents directly to Nathan. "Until three hours ago, when the Franklin County Family Court issued an emergency temporary restraining order and absolute custody decree based on evidence of severe spousal abandonment, medical negligence, and perjury."
