Chapter 4 - The Ring on the Table

For five seconds, the only sound in the room was the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the soft breathing of the triplets in their bassinet.
“Marry… marry you?” I stammered, staring at Julian as if he had just suggested we build a rocket ship to Mars. “Mr. Vance, you must be insane. We’ve known each other for roughly twelve hours, and eleven of those hours I spent unconscious!”
“Twelve hours is plenty of time when you know what you want,” Julian replied with infuriating calm, straightening up from the bed frame and sliding his hands into his pockets. “Let me clarify the terms, Claire. I am not proposing romance. I am proposing a strategic alliance.”
“An alliance,” I repeated flatly.
“Correct,” Julian said, walking toward the window again. “My grandfather’s will stipulates that before I can assume full, uncontested control of Vance Enterprises’ global shipping conglomerate next month, I must be legally married. For years, the board has been pressuring me to find a suitable corporate match—some socialite daughter of an old-money family who will smile for the cameras and cause zero complications. I have resisted, naturally. But finding someone who is intelligent, discreet, and possesses a personal axe to grind against the exact corporate bloodline that is currently trying to undermine my upcoming European expansion? That is a rare alignment of interests.”
“You want to use me to satisfy your grandfather’s will,” I said, the pieces clicking together with chilling clarity.
“And in return,” Julian turned back around, his gaze locking onto mine with devastating precision, “I will use my resources, my legal team, and my personal fortune to systematically dismantle Ethan Mercer. We will invalidate his corporate holdings, freeze his newly acquired assets in California, strip him of his board seat at the Mercer Group, and ensure that by the time I am done with him, he won’t even be able to afford the gas for his sports car. You get justice, absolute financial security, and a fortress that no man will ever dare breach again. Your children will want for nothing.”
I looked down at the tiny baby sleeping peacefully against my chest, then over at the two boys resting quietly in the bassinet. They were innocent, vulnerable, and completely dependent on me. If I walked out of here alone, I would be crushed by the legal and financial machinery Ethan had already set in motion. Julian Vance wasn't just offering a lifeline; he was offering an impenetrable titanium shield.
“And what happens after the board vote?” I asked, my voice steadying. “When your corporate requirements are met?”
“Then we file for an amicable, quiet divorce on grounds of irreconcilable differences, and you walk away with a settlement that makes you one of the wealthiest women on the Eastern Seaboard,” Julian replied without missing a beat. “Or, if you prefer to maintain the arrangement indefinitely to ensure your children’s legacy, we keep the ring on your finger. The choice will be entirely yours.”
It was the most cynical, calculated proposal imaginable. Yet, standing in the wreckage of my destroyed life, it was also the most honest thing anyone had offered me in years. Ethan had lied to me with sweet words and false promises while driving a knife into my back. Julian Vance was offering me a cold, hard contract with no illusions attached.
“Prove it,” I said softly.
Julian raised an eyebrow. “Prove what?”
“Prove that you can destroy him,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “Ethan thinks he’s untouchable because he’s closing a major venture capital merger in Los Angeles next Friday with the Sterling Group. He thinks that deal will make him immune to any legal retaliation I launch from New York.”
A slow, predatory smile spread across Julian’s face—a smile that revealed why Wall Street insiders called him the Obsidian Shark.
“The Sterling Group?” Julian chuckled softly, pulling out his phone. “Claire, my venture capital firm is the primary capital backing the Sterling Group’s expansion. Ethan Mercer thinks he’s walking into a coronation in Los Angeles next Friday. What he doesn't know is that the velvet rope is about to snap.”
Julian tapped his screen twice, placed the phone to his ear, and spoke into the receiver with icy command:
“Connect me to the senior partners in LA. Tell them to pause the Mercer acquisition. I’m sending over a new primary shareholder agreement this afternoon. And cancel Ethan Mercer’s VIP parking pass.”
May you like
He hung up, slipped the phone back into his pocket, and reached into his jacket. He pulled out a small, black velvet box, walked over to the bed, and laid it neatly on the bedside table beside the water pitcher.
“Take the night to rest, Claire,” Julian said, turning toward the door. “Tomorrow morning, my legal team will bring the paperwork. When you sign it, you stop being a victim of Ethan Mercer, and you become a Vance.”
