Chapter 3 - The Cold War BeginsBy late afternoon, the penthouse was entirely empty of my presence. The boxes containing my life were loaded into the back of a rented transport van parked two blocks away, overseen by a private security detail Darius had insisted on hiring.

I sat at a corner table inside a quiet, high-end cafe across the street from the Grand Hawthorne Hotel in Manhattan, watching the entrance of Trevor’s corporate headquarters through the tinted glass window.
My phone was vibrating almost continuously.
Calls from unknown numbers. Voicemails from Trevor’s corporate office. Frantic text messages from his personal cell phone asking where I was, demanding to know what I had done with the bank accounts, and begging me to answer.
“Naomi, please pick up. We can talk about this like adults. Whatever you think you found, it’s a misunderstanding. Please don't do something rash.”
I watched the screen light up, read the words, and locked the phone without opening the message.
For six years, those texts would have sent me into a spiral of anxiety. I would have dropped everything, rushed home, and tried to soothe his temper, fix his mistakes, and restore peace to a marriage that he was secretly burning to the ground behind my back.
Now, reading his panic felt like watching static on a television screen.
A shadow fell across my table. I looked up to see Darius standing there, holding two cups of black coffee and sliding into the leather booth opposite me.
"The preliminary freeze order has been officially served to Trevor's corporate legal team," Darius said, setting a coffee cup down before me. "His managing partners are in absolute chaos. They had no idea he was siphoning capital from the subsidiary accounts to fund his personal lifestyle and maintain a secondary apartment in Tribeca."
"Tribeca?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "He told me that apartment was a corporate satellite office for visiting investors."
"It was a crash pad," Darius replied dryly, taking a sip of his coffee. "Leased under Sienna Hayes's name, but paid for using corporate wires authorized by your husband. Which means the board of directors isn't just looking at a messy divorce; they're looking at a multi-million-dollar breach of fiduciary duty."
I looked out the window at the gray Manhattan sky, feeling a strange, profound sense of lightness.
"What happens next, Darius?"
"Next, Trevor lands," he said, leaning forward with a grim, satisfied smile. "He expects to return to a messy apartment, a crying wife begging him to stay, and a quiet week to weigh his options. Instead, he’s going to be met by federal marshals serving a subpoena, a board of directors demanding his immediate resignation, and a bank account that won't even cover a cup of coffee at the airport."
"And Sienna?" I asked.
"Sienna’s father is a prominent real estate developer in Chicago," Darius noted, pulling a tablet from his briefcase. "When his legal team realizes that Sienna’s name is attached to the fraudulent wire transfers used to purchase the Tribeca property, she’s going to find out very quickly how loyal a corporate executive is when his own skin is on the line."
I wrapped my hands around the warm ceramic coffee mug, feeling the steady thrum of my own pulse.
Trevor had spent eight months whispering to another woman about how predictable I was. He had assumed that because I was loyal, I was trapped. He had assumed that because I fixed things, I would clean up his mess and forgive his betrayal.
He had miscalculated every single variable.

"He's scheduled to land at JFK at 8:00 PM," I murmured, checking the time on my watch.
"Flight 412 from Los Angeles," Darius confirmed, tapping his tablet screen. "Shall we go give the prodigal husband a proper welcome home?"
