Chapter 2 - The Arrival of Arthur VanceAt 11:35 PM, the heavy, rhythmic thrum of twin turbine helicopter blades vibrated through the high glass windows of the hospital's top floor.

Two minutes later, the double steel doors at the end of the ICU corridor were thrown open with a sharp, heavy force that echoed down the hallway.
Walking down the hall, flanked by four broad-shouldered security operators in dark suits and two senior legal associates carrying heavy leather briefcases bound by red judicial seals, was my father, Arthur Vance.
At sixty-four, my father was a legend in North American corporate law—a tall, broad-shouldered titan with silver hair, razor-sharp blue eyes, and an unshakeable, sovereign authority that had dismantled corrupt corporations and greedy executives for forty years.
Behind him walked Dr. Julian Sterling, the Chief of Pediatric Critical Care at Johns Hopkins, whom my father had brought along on his private jet from Baltimore.
"Hannah!" my father called out, his broad frame sweeping across the floor, wrapping his strong, warm arms around my shoulders, pulling me into a fierce, protective embrace.
"Dad..." I choked out, pressing my face against his coat for five seconds before stepping back, looking into his severe, carved features. "He put a DNR on her chart, Dad. He asked about an autopsy."
My father’s dark blue eyes narrowed into freezing, lethal slits. He didn't yell. He turned slowly toward Dr. Sterling.
"Julian," Arthur commanded flatly. "Inspect my granddaughter immediately. I want a full toxicology screen, a full neural audit, and a private nursing detail posted outside Room 412 twenty-four hours a day."
"Right away, Arthur," Dr. Sterling nodded respectfully, stepping straight into Emma’s room with two senior ICU nurses.
My father turned to his lead legal associate, a sharp-eyed woman named Rachel Hayes.
"Rachel," my father ordered, his voice laced with a cold, absolute heat. "Execute the emergency judicial freeze on all joint accounts registered under Trevor Brooks's name. Issue an immediate subpoena for Weston Maritime’s corporate payroll ledgers, and contact Special Agent Miller at the FBI Financial Crimes Division."

Rachel opened her leather binder, her pen moving with blinding speed. "Consider it done, Mr. Vance. What about the insurance policy?"
"The three-million-dollar policy executed under Prudential Maritime?" Arthur offered a dark, razor-sharp smile—a look of pure, sovereign vengeance. "We aren't just canceling it, Rachel. We are using it as primary evidence for premeditated attempted murder."
