Chapter 2 - The Fall from the AltarThe chapel exploded into a chaotic storm of shocked murmurs, gasps, and flashing camera bulbs as reporters at the back of the church began frantically typing on their phones.

Vanessa let out a horrified gasp, dropping Caleb’s hand as if his skin had caught fire, backing two paces away from him on her high heels.

"Caleb...!" Vanessa whimpered, her voice trembling with sudden panic. "You said you owned forty percent of the firm! You said we were taking the penthouse!"

Caleb ignored her, his face turning an ugly, mottled crimson as he lunged toward Mr. Harlan, snatching at the parchment paper.

"This is fraud!" Caleb roared, his voice echoing off the high stone arches of the chapel. "I built the Q3 shipping expansion! I brought in the European investors! Arthur was senile! He didn't know what he was signing! I am the Vice President of Vane Global!"

Two broad-shouldered men wearing dark suits stepped out from behind the floral arrangements, instantly stepping into Caleb's path, forming an iron wall between him and the attorney.

They were Marcus and David—my father’s chief security operators for twenty years.

"Step back, Mr. Vance," Marcus commanded softly, his hand resting flat against his jacket.

"You can't do this!" Caleb screamed, turning his rage onto me, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at my face. "Eleanor! Tell them to stop this insanity! You know nothing about running a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate! You're a housewife! You belong at home taking care of our baby!"

I took one slow, deliberate step toward my husband, holding my chin high, my posture fluid, royal, and sovereign.

"I spent four years at Oxford studying international corporate law, Caleb," I stated, my voice clear, calm, and laced with an icy precision that cut through his shouting like a razor blade. "While you were using my father’s money to buy Vanessa designer dresses in Milan, I was managing the Vane Family Private Equity Trust from my home office."

Caleb’s jaw sagged open in total, horror-stricken shock.

"Mr. Vance," Mr. Harlan added smoothly, holding up a second leather folder. "As of ten minutes ago, the state police executed an emergency asset freeze on all joint accounts held under your name, along with an immediate eviction order for the Vane Estate in Greenwich."

Vanessa let out a loud, pathetic shriek, throwing her designer clutch bag flat against Caleb’s chest. "You lied to me, Caleb! You told me she was broke!"

She turned on her heel, her high heels clicking frantically against the stone floor, sprinting through the chapel aisle toward the exit, abandoning Caleb in front of two hundred high-society witnesses.

Caleb stood completely alone near my father's casket, his expensive suit rumpled, sweat pouring down his face, staring at me as if he were seeing a ghost.

"Eleanor... please..." Caleb whimpered, his voice cracking into sharp, pathetic pieces. "I'm your husband... I'm the father of your child..."

"You are a ghost, Caleb," I whispered softly. "Get out of my father's church."

Marcus and David caught Caleb’s arms, pulling his groveling, weeping frame down the center aisle, tossing him out into the freezing autumn rain.
