Chapter 4 - The Desperate Strike

Two weeks into the preparation for the Sterling Gala, the psychological war shifted from the corporate boardroom to my personal life.
I had moved out of the estate I shared with Julian and into a high-rise penthouse overlooking the river. Every lock had been changed, my security system upgraded, and my legal team had served Julian with formal divorce papers citing irretrievable breakdown and financial fraud.
It was 8:00 PM on a rainy Thursday when my phone buzzed. It was an unknown number.
"Eleanor?"
It was Chloe. Her voice was cracked, wet with crying, stripped of the polished, manipulative sweetness she had used for years.
"I have nothing to say to you, Chloe," I said, preparing to hang up.
"Wait! Please, Eleanor, don't hang up!" she screamed into the receiver. "Julian locked me out! He took my car! He took the Cartier bracelet, he took my savings account—he had joint access to everything! He told me if I didn't help him, he’d tell the police that the entire embezzlement scheme was my idea!"
I stood by the window, watching the rain strike the glass. "You chose him, Chloe. You looked me in the eye in that garage while his hand was on you and told me not to ruin my own birthday. You made your decision."
"He lied to me!" she sobbed wildly. "He told me you were going to fire me anyway! He said you hated me, that you always thought I was useless and stupid compared to you! He manipulated me, Eleanor! I'm your sister!"
"You're my sister who helped a thief try to burn my life down," I said, my voice unyielding. "If Julian stole from you, call the police. I am not your savior anymore."
"He has files, Eleanor!" Chloe blurted out, her tone suddenly shifting from sobbing desperation to a sharp, toxic threat. "He saved everything! He downloaded the client accounts, the personal tax returns, the NDA agreements from our high-profile celebrity clients! He’s meeting with Vanguard Events tonight! He's selling our entire client database to our biggest rival for half a million dollars!"
My blood ran cold. Vanguard Events was our most ruthless competitor. If Julian leaked our proprietary client lists and confidential pricing models, it would destroy Morgan Events Group before the Sterling Gala ever took place.
"Where is he meeting them?" I asked softly.
"He... he said he’d help me if I got him my master security keycard from the office," Chloe whispered. "He's meeting Vanguard’s rep at the Grand Hyatt downtown in an hour. In the lounge. If you give me my job back, Eleanor... if you promise not to press charges... I'll give you his password to the encrypted cloud backup where he stored the stolen files."
I took a deep breath, realizing in that moment that my sister hadn't changed at all. She was still trying to trade secrets, still trying to negotiate her way out of consequences.
"Send me the location," I said. "And Chloe? Don't ever call this number again."
An hour later, I stepped into the dimly lit, opulent lounge of the Grand Hyatt. Rain dripped from my umbrella as I scanned the leather booths near the back.
There sat Julian. He was wearing a dark trench coat, sipping a scotch, and holding a sleek silver flash drive in his fingers. Across from him sat Marcus Vance—not his lawyer, but the senior vice president of Vanguard Events.
Julian was smiling, pitching the stolen data with the exact same animated charm he had used on me twelve years ago.
I didn't approach the table. Instead, I walked directly to two uniformed police officers standing near the entrance, flanked by my head of corporate security and our lead corporate litigation attorney.
"Officer," I said calmly, handing them a certified court order signed by a Superior Court judge just thirty minutes prior. "That man is Julian Morgan. He is currently in possession of stolen corporate property and trade secrets subject to an active federal injunction."
Julian was in the middle of laughing at a joke when the two officers approached his booth.
"Julian Morgan?" the lead officer asked.
Julian’s drink froze halfway to his mouth. "What... what is this? I'm having a private business meeting."
"You're under arrest for grand larceny, corporate espionage, and violation of a financial restraining order," the officer said, grabbing Julian’s arm and pulling him out of the booth.
The silver flash drive slipped from Julian’s fingers, bouncing across the marble floor until it stopped right at the toe of my designer heels.
I leaned down, picked up the flash drive, and slipped it into my pocket.

Julian stared at me as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, his face contorted in a mix of rage, shock, and total, helpless humiliation. "Eleanor! You trapped me! You set me up!"
"You set yourself up twelve years ago, Julian," I said, standing tall as the officers led him through the crowded lounge. "You just took a long time to realize it."
