Chapter 4 - The AuditThe cold rainy fog of Queens yielded to a gray, heavy dawn.

At 8:15 AM, inside a small, cramped room at the local road lodge near Interstate 495, Julian woke up to the sound of furious pounding on his door.

He groaned, sitting up on the stiff mattress. His tailored suit was crumpled on the floor, his head throbbed with a blinding headache, and the smell of stale coffee filled the small room. Beside him, Chloe was fast asleep, wrapped in a thin acrylic blanket, her baby rustling in a portable crib near the window.

"Julian! Open the damn door!" a voice barked from the hallway.

Julian stumbled out of bed, pulling on his trousers, and unlocked the door.

Standing in the hallway was a tall man in a dark trench coat, his face red with anger, holding a wet umbrella. It was Marcus Sterling—Chloe’s father and the Senior Vice President of Operations at Vance Logistics Canada.

"Marcus?" Julian blinked, rubbing his eyes in disbelief. "What... what are you doing in New York?!"

Marcus didn't answer with words. He stepped into the room and slammed his fist straight into Julian’s jaw!

CRACK!

Julian stumbled backward, crashing into the laminate nightstand, bringing down the lamp and a plastic cup of water. He clutched his bleeding lip, staring up at his boss in pure terror.

"Dad!" Chloe shrieked, jumping out of bed, grabbing a robe. "Dad! What are you doing?!"

"Shut your mouth, Chloe!" Marcus roared, his voice shaking the thin walls of the motel room. He turned his venomous glare back down to Julian, who was groaning on the carpet. "You worthless, incompetent piece of trash! Do you have any idea what you've done?!"

"Marcus... please..." Julian wheezed, wiping blood from his mouth. "Elena took the house... she tricked my mother into changing the will... I’m working on getting a litigator—"

"Forget the house, you idiot!" Marcus shouted, pulling a stack of legal documents from his coat pocket and throwing them onto Julian’s chest. "The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Ontario Securities Commission raided our Toronto headquarters at six o'clock this morning!"

Julian froze, the blood draining from his face even faster than it had the night before. "What... what?!"

"The forensic auditors found everything!" Marcus yelled, leaning over him like a demon. "The fake invoices! The shell companies in the Cayman Islands! The three hundred thousand dollars you wired to buy Chloe’s diamond ring and her condo in Yorkville! You cooked the books, Julian! And you signed your name on every single fraudulent tax return!"

Chloe gasped, turning her wide, terrified eyes toward Julian. "Julian... you said those funds were from your executive performance bonus!"

"They weren't bonuses, you stupid girl!" Marcus spat at his daughter. "He was stealing from the firm! And because I signed off on his quarterly reports as Senior VP, my assets have been frozen, my license has been suspended, and I am being named as a co-conspirator in a federal embezzlement case!"

Julian lay on the carpet, his mind spinning into complete, catastrophic darkness.

"How..." Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "How did they find out? The offshore accounts were completely hidden..."

"An anonymous whistleblower sent a two-hundred-page audit file to the Canadian Revenue Agency yesterday afternoon," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet whisper. "Complete with bank transfers, IP addresses, and encrypted email logs. The file was sent from an IP address registered to 142 Elmwood Avenue, Queens."

Julian’s breath caught in his throat.

Elena.

She hadn't just been sitting at her desk designing logos and nursing his sick mother. While he was celebrating his ill-gotten wealth in Toronto, she had been quietly tracking every single dollar he moved, assembling an airtight criminal case that would destroy him completely.

"My lawyers say the extradition papers are being prepared right now," Marcus added, pulling out his phone. "The NYPD has been notified. You have about twenty minutes before the police pull into this parking lot, Julian."

Julian looked at Marcus, then looked at Chloe, who was backing away from him as if he were covered in poison.

"Chloe..." Julian reached out his hand, tears streaming down his bruised face. "Chloe, please... you have to help me..."

"Don't touch me!" Chloe shrieked, pulling her baby into her arms and snatching her designer purse from the chair. "Dad, take me away from him! He lied to me! He told me he was a millionaire!"

"Get your bags, Chloe," Marcus said coldly, not sparing Julian another glance. "We are driving to New Jersey to meet my criminal defense attorney. Leave him to rot."

"Chloe! CHLOE!" Julian screamed, dragging himself across the cheap motel carpet as Chloe and her father walked out the door, slamming it shut behind them.

The room went dead quiet.

Julian lay alone on the floor, clutching his bleeding lip, listening to the rain beat against the window, waiting for the sirens to arrive.
