Chapter 1 - The Echoes of BetrayalThe heavy wool of the gray maid’s uniform scratched against my skin, a stark, coarse reminder of the fragile illusion I had lived in for the past six years. Standing in front of the full-length mirror in the basement staff quarters, I barely recognized the woman staring back. The silk dresses, the diamond-encrusted jewelry, and the carefully manicured identity of Mrs.

Upstairs, the vaulted ceilings of our Dallas mansion echoed with a quiet, sickening familiarity.
Only hours earlier, Ethan had kissed my cheek at the front door, his cologne lingering in the air as he whispered how much he would miss me during my supposed five-day business trip to Austin. He had looked into my eyes with the very same tender, adoring expression that had won my heart during our college days. He had promised to keep the home running smoothly, completely unaware that the woman he thought he had successfully banished to West Texas was currently walking back through his service entrance with a heavy stainless-steel cleaning cart.
“Are you ready, Clara?” Grace asked quietly, her hand resting gently on my shoulder. Her eyes were filled with a mixture of sorrow and fierce loyalty.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, forcing my trembling fingers to grip the handle of the cleaning cart. “I have to be. If this is a nightmare, I need to wake up. And if it’s real... I need to see every single piece of it.”
With every step I took up the back stairwell, the memories of the life I thought I built seemed to mock me.
This house in the exclusive Preston Hollow neighborhood was supposed to be our sanctuary. Ethan had personally overseen every detail of its design—from the imported Italian marble floors to the custom mahogany doors. He told me it was a monument to our love, a fortress where nothing could ever touch us.
Now, standing on the landing of the second-floor gallery, I realized it was nothing more than a gilded cage designed to keep his secrets hidden in plain sight.
Faint sounds drifted down the grand hallway—soft laughter, the gentle clink of crystal glassware, and a smooth, sultry voice that did not belong to me.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My breath hitched in my throat. I pushed the heavy metal cleaning cart forward, its wheels gliding silently over the plush runner rug as I approached the master suite.
The double doors were cracked open just an inch. A warm, golden sliver of light spilled out onto the dark hardwood floor, cutting through the shadows of the hallway.
I took a slow, agonizing step closer.
Through the narrow gap, the horrifying reality of my marriage crystallized into sharp, unforgiving focus.
Ethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking our sprawling private courtyard. But he wasn't alone. Wrapped tightly in his arms was a stunning woman with cascading dark curls, wearing a silk robe that unmistakably belonged in my closet. Her head rested against his chest, right over the heart that was supposed to beat only for me.

And then, Ethan’s voice cut through the silence of the night, carrying words that shattered my entire existence into dust.
“Don’t worry about Clara,” Ethan murmured, pressing a passionate kiss into the stranger’s hair. “She’s completely blind to everything. This house, this life, this entire estate... it was never hers, my love. It has always belonged to you.”
