Chapter 1 - The Contract of VengeanceThe shadows of the Halston Hotel service corridor felt like a sanctuary after the blinding crystal chandeliers and cruel whisperings of the ballroom. I stood with my back pressed against the cool plaster, my breath steadying as the reality of what Nikolai Moretti had just proposed settled into my veins.

Julian had wanted to humiliate me. He had orchestrated a public spectacle designed to strip away my dignity, handing my engagement ring, my dress, and my future to my younger sister Serena with the callous arrogance of a man who believed the Hart family name could weather any storm. He expected me to weep, to beg, to shrink into the background as my mother commanded.

Instead, the older brother—the apex predator of Chicago’s underworld whom even the city's corrupt politicians whispered about with a mix of terror and awe—was offering me the ultimate weapon.

“You’re serious,” I whispered, looking up into Nikolai’s dark, razor-sharp eyes. The amber light from the hallway fixtures caught the sharp angles of his face, accentuating a presence so commanding it made the air in the corridor feel thin.

“I don’t make jokes about marriage, Evelyn,” Nikolai replied, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that sent a shiver down my spine. “And certainly not when my brother is trying to stage a coup within the Moretti family council.”

He stepped closer, the scent of expensive bourbon and rain clinging to his tailored wool coat.

“Julian thinks by parading Serena in front of the board, he’s securing the traditionalist vote,” Nikolai continued, his gaze unblinking. “He wants a pliable, glittering trophy wife who will smile on cue and look pretty at charity galas. But the family council isn't looking for a socialite. They’re looking for strength. A Moretti wife must command respect, not demand it.”

“And you think I can do that?” I asked, lifting my chin, refusing to let him see the lingering sting of Julian's betrayal.

“I know you can,” Nikolai said smoothly. “For three years, I watched you manage Julian’s erratic temperament, rescue his failing real estate acquisitions behind the scenes, and cover for his public scandals while your parents praised Serena for breathing. You are the architect of the life Julian is currently throwing away. It’s time you stopped building for a fool.”

The logic was cold, rational, and brutally accurate. For years, I had poured my intellect and patience into polishing a man who viewed me as nothing more than a predictable accessory. Julian had traded me for Serena because Serena demanded nothing and offered less, wrapped in the innocent victim act she had perfected since childhood.

“If we do this,” I said, narrowing my eyes as my mind began to calculate the chess board, “it can’t just be a temporary arrangement to spite your brother. If I step into the Moretti family, I want total control over my life, my resources, and a guarantee that Julian and Serena will never be able to cross my path again.”

Nikolai’s lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile.

“Not only will they not cross your path,” he promised, extending his hand, “they will have to bow when you enter the room. Do we have a deal, Evelyn?”

I looked at his outstretched hand. It was the hand of a man who commanded shipping ports, real estate syndicates, and underground empires. A man who could crush Julian’s ambitions with a single phone call.

I placed my hand in his. His grip was warm, firm, and absolute.

“When do we announce it?” I asked.

“Give me forty-eight hours to secure the marriage license and rewrite the council registry,” Nikolai said, his eyes glinting with a dark, satisfied ambition. “The Moretti family gala is in three days. We won’t just attend. We will rewrite the hierarchy of Chicago.”
