Chapter 1 - The Ring and the CrownThe air in the private service corridor behind the Halston ballroom smelled sharply of bleached linoleum, damp linen, and the bitter, toasted notes of leftover hotel coffee. The distant, muted hum of the string quartet from the ballroom sounded like a ghost ship drifting away in a storm.

I stood with my back pressed against the cool, painted drywall, my chest rising and falling in slow, controlled rhythms. My fingers were still ice-cold from the moment Julian had held up Serena’s hand—my ring catching the blinding flash of the crystal chandelier, gleaming like a cruel little joke on my sister's finger.

“You're wasting an excellent exit.”

The voice had startled me then, rich and dark as aged bourbon, slicing through the sterile quiet of the corridor. And now, standing face-to-face with Nikolai Moretti, the gravity of his proposal hung in the damp air between us like a loaded gun.

“...then I'll marry you instead.”

I stared at him. The dim overhead canister light caught the sharp angle of his cheekbones and the deep, fathomless dark of his eyes. He didn't look like a man making a joke. He looked like an architect examining the foundation of a skyscraper he intended to rebuild from the ashes.

“You're insane,” I whispered, though my voice lacked any real bite.

Nikolai didn't blink. He took a single, deliberate step closer, closing the distance just enough for me to notice the faint, clean scent of sandalwood and rain clinging to his tailored jacket. “Insanity is letting Julian walk out of this hotel believing he can insult a Hart—or a Moretti—without paying the toll. My family's council votes in three weeks to ratify the succession. If Julian thinks parading your sister around in your wedding dress makes him look like a patriarch, the council will laugh him out of the boardroom. But if I walk into that same boardroom with you... the game changes entirely.”

“A marriage of convenience,” I said, crossing my arms defensively over my silk gown. “You want to weaponize me against your own brother because you despise his ambition more than you care about family ties.”

“I care about power, Evelyn,” Nikolai corrected softly, his gaze dropping momentarily to my hands before returning to my eyes. “And right now, Julian has handed you the most powerful weapon in Chicago on a silver platter. He humiliated you in public. The rules of this city dictate that an insult of that magnitude requires a counter-weight. Marry me. Let’s see how long Julian's smile lasts when his rejected ex-fiancée becomes the matriarch of the entire syndicate.”

My mind raced. Every memory of my mother whispering ‘Don't embarrass us’ flashed through my head, followed instantly by my father’s cowardly nod: ‘Maybe this is for the best.’ They had traded me away like a defective stock option. They had chosen Serena’s effortless charm over my five years of quiet loyalty, unpaid labor, and social grooming for the Moretti family empire.

If I walked out of this hotel tonight alone, I would be the pitiable socialite who got dumped for her younger sister.

If I walked out on Nikolai Moretti's arm... I would own them all.

“If I do this,” I said, tilting my chin up to meet his dark, assessing gaze without flinching, “there are terms. My terms.”

A slow, dangerous smile finally broke across Nikolai’s face—not the mocking smirk his brother wore, but something sharper, heavier, and infinitely more intoxicating. “Name them.”

“First: no secrets between us regarding the syndicate or our arrangement. Second: my parents and Serena never receive a single cent, contract, or favor from the Moretti name ever again. And third...” I paused, letting the silence build. “...when we walk into that council meeting in three weeks, you let me speak for myself.”

Nikolai stared at me for three long seconds. Then, slowly, he extended his right hand, bare of rings, palm up.

“Deal,” he said.

Before I could second-guess the abyss I was stepping into, the heavy metal fire door at the end of the hallway burst open. Penny rushed through, panting heavily, her designer clutch gripped like a weapon.

“Evelyn! Thank God, your mother is sending security down the main—oh.” Penny froze dead in her tracks as she noticed who was standing in front of me. Her eyes darted from Nikolai’s tailored suit to my face, her jaw dropping. “Is that... Mr. Moretti?”

“Penny,” I said, taking a deep breath as I looked down at Nikolai’s open hand and placed my fingers in his firm, warm grasp. “Cancel the Uber. I have a wedding to plan.”
