Chapter 5 - Evidence on Display

Marcus turned toward the high-definition projection screens that had been discreetly mounted on either side of the altar—screens originally intended to display romantic photo montages of our childhoods and dating years.

"Before we finalize any matrimonial contracts," Marcus announced to the stunned congregation, "let us review a brief audio-visual presentation regarding the groom's true intentions for the bride's estate."

Marcus tapped his tablet.

The auditorium’s high-end sound system crackled to life. A moment later, the crystal-clear audio of the FaceTime call filled the silent botanical conservatory.

“Did you get her to sign that document yet?” Linda’s voice rang out, harsh and scheming.

Followed instantly by Nathan’s relaxed, mocking laugh: “Almost. She’s a bit suspicious, but after the wedding she’ll do whatever I want... We take her house and savings accounts. She’ll be left with nothing. I can't wait to get rid of her. She makes my skin crawl.”

The recording played on, capturing every venomous word, every arrogant laugh, every calculated plot to render me and my three children destitute.

In the front row, Linda let out a strangled shriek and covered her ears. Several guests gasped in horror, while my brother glared daggers across the aisle at Nathan’s cowering relatives.

Nathan stood paralyzed at the altar, trembling violently. The illusion of the charming, devoted fiancé had completely evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, cornered con man exposed in front of everyone he had ever tried to impress.

"As you can audio-visually verify," Marcus continued calmly, pocketing his tablet, "Mr. Nathan Hale entered into this engagement under false pretenses with the explicit intent of committing interstate financial fraud, elder/dependent manipulation, and unlawful asset conversion."

Nathan lunged forward, his face twisted in desperate rage. "You bitch! You set me up!" he screamed, abandoning all pretense as he reached out to grab my arm.

Before his fingers could even graze my sleeve, my two federal marshals moved with blinding speed. One grabbed Nathan’s arm, twisting it behind his back with practiced efficiency, while the other slapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

"Nathan Hale," the marshal announced loudly, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit financial fraud, wire fraud, and extortion. Anything you say can and will be used against you."

Linda screamed, lunging down the aisle toward her handcuffed son, only to be blocked by my brother, who stood like an immovable granite wall.

"Get your hands off my son!" Linda shrieked, tears of rage and humiliation streaming down her face. "This is illegal! You're ruining our lives!"

"No, Linda," I said, stepping forward in my immaculate ivory gown, looking down at the woman who had plotted my family's destruction. "We are simply returning the favor."
