Chapter 7 - The Sunrise We Claimed

Six months later, the Chicago winter broke into a brilliant, crisp spring morning.

The transition from a strategic alliance to something profoundly, terrifyingly real hadn't happened overnight. It had happened in the quiet moments—over late-night coffee in the penthouse kitchen, in the way Nikolai trusted my instincts during dangerous corporate negotiations, and in the fierce, absolute protection he wrapped around me every single day.

We stood together on the wraparound balcony of our newly renovated estate overlooking Lake Michigan.

The morning sky was painted in breathtaking shades of gold, rose, and violet, casting a brilliant glow over the sparkling water below.

Nikolai wrapped both arms around me, pulling me flush against his body as we watched the sun break over the horizon.

“You know,” Nikolai murmured softly, pressing a lingering kiss to the crown of my head, “when I offered to marry you in that service hallway, I thought I was just acquiring the ultimate weapon to destroy my brother.”

I smiled, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck, looking up into those deep, amber eyes that held no secrets from me anymore.

“And what do you think now, Mr. Moretti?” I teased gently.

Nikolai’s gaze softened, a rare, breathtaking warmth breaking through his stoic exterior. He reached out, his fingers gently tracing the dazzling, flawless diamond ring resting on my finger—a ring he had personally designed for me, far more magnificent than the one Julian had ever given me.

“I think,” Nikolai whispered, his voice thick with a fierce, unwavering devotion, “bringing you into my life was the only real victory I ever won.”

I pulled him down, capturing his lips in a deep, passionate kiss that made the entire world—and all the ghosts of my past—fade away into absolute nothingness.

Standing there in the golden morning light, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

I hadn't just survived the night my old life ended. I had claimed the entire sunrise.
