Chapter 7 - Under New Management

Six months later, the grand opening of the Bennett Community Center and Trust Headquarters was the premier social event of the season—not because of high-society gossip or scandalous drama, but because it marked the triumphant rebirth of a woman everyone had tried to bury.

The ballroom of the newly restored historic building was filled with light, laughter, and successful entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders. There were no crystal chandeliers dripping with forced luxury, and no fake smiles masking toxic betrayals. Every person in this room was here because of authentic connection and shared vision.

I stood near the grand staircase, wearing an emerald-green silk dress that I had chosen entirely for myself, feeling more confident and radiant than I ever had in my life.

Across the room, I caught sight of a familiar, pathetic figure near the catering tables. Ryan.

He looked haggard, his suit slightly rumpled, his hair unstyled. He had managed to avoid prison time through a plea deal that stripped him of all assets, but he was legally bankrupt, his architectural license suspended, and his reputation permanently stained. Amber hadn't stayed around long once the money dried up; she had packed her designer bags and moved back with our mother, leaving Ryan completely alone.

When Ryan caught my eye across the crowded room, he hesitated, looking as though he wanted to walk over and say something—perhaps an apology, perhaps another demand. But before he could take a single step, two of Dominic’s security guards casually shifted their positions, blocking his path with silent, immovable authority.

Ryan swallowed hard, lowered his gaze, and turned away, shuffling out the side doors into the cold night air where he belonged.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel satisfaction. I felt nothing at all for him—which is the true definition of being over someone.

"Penny for your thoughts?"

A warm hand rested lightly on the small of my back. I turned to see Dominic looking down at me, his eyes dark, intense, and filled with a warmth that was meant only for me. Emilia was clinging to his other hand, wearing a matching green dress and holding a sparkling cider flute.

"I was just thinking about that night in the garden," I murmured, leaning back slightly against his touch. "If Ryan hadn't humiliated me in front of two hundred people under those crystal chandeliers... I never would have walked away."

"Then I suppose we owe your ex-fiancé a small debt of gratitude," Dominic smiled, his gaze softening. "Though I would have found a way to meet you eventually. Forces like yours are difficult to miss."

"Is that your way of flirting, Mr. Moretti?" I teased, raising an eyebrow.

"That was my way of stating an immutable fact," he chuckled, leaning down to press a gentle, lingering kiss to my temple, right where Emilia couldn't quite see.

As the music swelled around us and the laughter of the room washed over us like a warm tide, I looked out across the crowd and realized something wonderful. They had tried to break me, tried to silence me, and tried to strip me of everything I had built. But they had failed.

I hadn't just survived their betrayal. I had built an empire of my own, surrounded by people who loved me for who I was, not what I could do for them. And as I raised my glass alongside Dominic and Emilia, I knew the best chapter of my life was only just beginning.
