Chapter 6 - The Shadows Closing InThe transition was swift, brutal, and absolute.

Within a month, Crowe Holdings was liquidated, its assets carved up and sold off to rival firms. Julian Crowe, facing federal indictment for corporate fraud and coercion, had fled the country for a non-extradition island in the Caribbean, leaving his family name permanently disgraced. My father, stripped of his wealth, was living in a modest suburban apartment on the outskirts of Chicago, entirely irrelevant.
And Miles?
Miles was cancer-free.
The experimental treatments at St. Jude’s, backed by the full financial and medical weight of the Romano Trust, had worked miracles. On a crisp November afternoon, Miles walked out of the hospital doors under his own power, laughing as he hugged me so hard my ribs ached.
We moved him into a sunlit, historic brownstone in Lincoln Park—a home I had purchased with my own design firm's earnings, completely independent of Dante’s empire, though Dante had ensured the security detail guarding the perimeter was top-tier.
Yet, even as peace settled over our lives, a heavy, electric tension remained.
For weeks, Dante had been working late into the night in his private study, receiving encrypted calls from overseas, reviewing encrypted security reports, and doubling the patrols around the Romano estate and Miles's brownstone.
I knew the underworld didn't forgive a vacuum of power. When Dante dismantled Crowe Holdings and fractured the old syndicate alliances, he had made powerful enemies—men who operated in the dark corners of international finance and weaponized cartels.
It happened on a rainy Friday night.
I was at the Romano estate, sitting by the grand fireplace in the library reading an architectural journal, waiting for Dante to finish a conference call in his study down the hall.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered once. Then twice.
Then, total darkness.
The emergency backup generators kicked in a second later, bathing the mansion in a dull, amber security glow. But the absolute silence of the estate changed.
The soft hum of the HVAC system was replaced by the distant, sharp pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire echoing from the perimeter gates.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
I stood up instantly, dropping the book, and reached for the heavy brass poker by the fireplace.
The library doors swung open.
Dante stood there. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, a sleek black 9mm handgun already gripped firmly in his right hand. His face was a mask of cold, lethal focus.
"Stay behind me," Dante ordered, his voice commanding and absolute as he crossed the room in two long strides.
"What's happening?" I asked, my voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through my veins.
"A professional hit squad," Dante said bluntly, his gray eyes scanning the hallway outside. "Julian’s remaining partners hired a syndicate cell out of Eastern Europe. They thought they could catch me off guard while I was home."
Before I could answer, the reinforced glass window on the far side of the library shattered in a shower of glittering shards.
Two masked figures dropped silently from the second-floor balcony outside, landing on the hardwood floor with tactical precision, assault rifles raised.
Dante didn't hesitate.
He shoved me behind a heavy mahogany bookcase, pivoting with blinding speed. Two sharp cracks shattered the quiet of the library. The first intruder jerked violently and crashed backward into the glass coffee table. The second intruder raised his rifle, but Dante fired again, the bullet striking true before the man could pull his trigger.
Silence descended on the room once more, broken only by the sound of heavy rain tapping against the broken window.
Dante lowered his weapon, his chest rising and falling slightly, his eyes instantly shifting back to me to ensure I was untouched.
He walked over, kneeling down in front of me where I crouched behind the bookcase, his strong hands gripping my shoulders.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice rough with a fierce, unmasked panic that I had never heard from him before.
May you like
I shook my head, my hands resting against his chest, feeling the frantic, heavy thud of his heart. "I'm fine. Dante... they're coming after you because of me. Because we dismantled them."
"They're coming after me because they thought I was vulnerable," Dante corrected, his gray eyes burning with an intense, terrifying fire. He reached up, his thumb gently brushing a speck of dust from my cheek. "And they just made the biggest mistake of their lives."
