Chapter 5 - The Recovery of the Black LedgerThe private library of the Ashford estate was lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, oil paintings, and leather armchairs.

I walked directly to the center of the room, stopping beside the massive antique mahogany desk.

I reached down, grabbed the corner of the heavy silk Persian rug, and pulled it back, exposing the polished oak floorboards beneath.

Leo stepped forward with a crowbar, inserting the steel edge into the subtle seam near the desk leg, prying open the concealed wooden panel.

CLACK.

A heavy, industrial steel floor safe featuring a four-digit mechanical dial sat embedded in the concrete foundation below.

Nico dropped onto one knee beside the opening, looking up at me. "Do you know the combination, Nora?"

I closed my eyes for a single second, recalling the dark night twelve years ago when I had watched my father's trembling hands turn the brass dial under the dim lamp light.

"11... 14... 96," I spoke clearly, every digit dropping like an iron weight into the quiet room. "My birthdate. The day he always told me was the worst day of his life."

Nico turned the dial with smooth, mechanical precision.

CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.

The heavy steel door swung open on silent hinges.

Inside sat three thick, leather-bound black books, along with twelve encrypted flash drives and a stack of confidential bank routing sheets.

Nico pulled out the top leather book, opening it under the desk lamp.

His slate-gray eyes scanned down the pages—taking in names of high-ranking state judges, federal prosecutors, police chiefs, and rival syndicate captains, accompanied by exact bank account numbers, blackmail audio logs, and wire transfer slips.

On page forty-two sat the primary entry from three weeks ago:

[PAYMENT TO MARK VANCE — $500,000 FOR THE SABOTAGE OF MARCO FERRARA’S VEHICLE ON THE EAST RIVER DRIVE.]

Nico’s breath hitched in his chest. His gray eyes flared with a dark, apocalyptic fury that made even Leo step back three paces in quiet respect.

Nico stood up slowly, clutching the black ledger in his broad hand, looking toward the open foyer where Edmund sat weeping on his knees.

"He didn't just sabotage Marco's car to clear his debt, Nora," Nico whispered softly, his baritone dropping into a register cold as winter ice. "He was planning to use these blackmail files to take control of the entire East Coast distribution network."

Nico turned to face me, taking my hands in his, looking deep into my hazel eyes with infinite respect and devotion.

"You didn't just give me the key to his safe, my love," Nico promised softly. "You just saved my family."
