Chapter 1 - The Key in the ShadowsThe heavy mahogany door of the master bedroom vibrated as another muffled shout echoed up the grand staircase.

Nico Ferrara didn't flinch. His tall frame stood motionless under the warm, amber glow of the chandelier, his slate-gray eyes fixed entirely on my trembling silhouette.
The white silk of the wedding dress sat pooled around my ankles, exposing the pale, jagged lines cutting across my ribcage and spine—the silver, raised scars left behind by leather belts, cold brass buckles, and twelve years of enforced, painful silence inside the Ashford estate.
Nico slowly reached down, picked up his discarded wool jacket from the velvet bench, and draped it gently over my bare shoulders.
The heavy, warm fabric smelled of cedar, rain, and expensive tobacco. His fingers brushed against my skin for a fraction of a second—a touch so surprisingly soft, cautious, and deliberate that a involuntary gasp escaped my throat.
"Stay here," Nico commanded softly. His voice held no trace of the cold, cruel vengeance he had promised at the altar six hours ago. It was low, smooth, and dropped into an absolute, unyielding register. "Do not leave this room."
"Nico... wait," I choked out, my fingers instinctively clutching the lapels of his jacket against my chest. "You don't understand what he's capable of. He brought men with him... he has security details who answer only to him!"
Nico looked down at my pale hand resting against his chest. A faint, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of his lips—a look that transformed his handsome, imposing face into something downright terrifying.
"Nora," Nico murmured, stepping closer until I could feel the hot heat radiating from his chest. "Your father is standing inside my house. In this city, men like Edmund Ashford do not dictate terms to the Ferrara family."
He turned on his heel and walked toward the bedroom door.
Standing in the hallway was Leo, Nico's chief of security, holding a suppressed sidearm against his thigh, his face pale and tense.
"How many men did Ashford bring with him, Leo?" Nico asked, reaching into his waist holster to check the seat of his magazine with a quiet, mechanical CLICK.
"Eight, Boss," Leo reported rasply. "They pushed through the front gates claiming they had an emergency legal injunction. Edmund is screaming that you forced Nora to sign over her trust accounts under duress."
"Trust accounts," Nico repeated, his gray eyes narrowing into slits of pure, lethal ice. He turned his head slightly, looking back over his shoulder at me as I stood beside the bed wrapped in his dark coat. "He doesn't want her back because he misses his daughter, Leo. He wants her back because he realizes she’s alive, married to me, and beyond his reach."
"Nora!" my father’s shrill, panicked voice roared from the grand foyer below. "Nora, get down here right now! You are coming home!"

Nico didn't shout back. He pulled his dark suit jacket straight, unbuttoned his top collar, and walked calmly toward the grand marble staircase, his heavy leather shoes clicking cleanly against the floorboards.
"Lock the master suite, Leo," Nico ordered over his shoulder. "And if anyone other than me tries to turn that door handle... put a bullet through their chest."
