Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Three months later, the scandal that had rocked Atlanta’s corporate elite had faded into the background of financial headlines, replaced by Garrett Corbin’s triumphant return to the helm of Apex Global Industries.
The corporate restructuring meeting was held in the grand auditorium of the downtown headquarters. Hundreds of shareholders, board members, and international journalists sat in tiered velvet seats, murmuring quietly as the house lights dimmed.
I stood backstage near the control monitor, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit that fit like armor—a far cry from the worn-out uniforms and sweatpants of my past. My bank account balance wasn't hovering at $340 anymore; my eviction notices were a distant nightmare, and my ex-husband Christopher was probably somewhere in San Diego still wondering why his life had imploded while mine was soaring.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the corporate announcer's voice boomed over the state-of-the-art sound system. "Please welcome the Chairman and CEO of Apex Global Industries, Mr. Garrett Corbin!"
Polite applause erupted, quickly turning into a thundering, standing ovation as Garrett walked out from the wings. He didn't use a wheelchair. He walked with a slight, determined limp, leaning on a polished dark wood cane, but his back was straight, his head held high, and his presence commanded the entire room.
He stepped up to the center podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked out over the sea of faces.
"Thank you," Garrett’s voice resonated clearly through the hall. "Six months ago, I was told I would never walk again. I was told my career was over, my family was protecting me, and my legacy belonged to others. Every single one of those statements was a lie."
He paused, his slate-gray eyes scanning the crowd before locking directly onto the backstage doorway where I stood.
"A company is only as strong as its integrity," Garrett continued, his voice softening with profound sincerity. "And an empire is nothing without the person who reminds you how to fight when you've been knocked down. I want to dedicate this new chapter of Apex Global not to the shareholders or the board, but to the woman who walked into my dark house, looked past the illusions, and taught me that true strength isn't about never falling—it's about refusing to stay down."

Every head in the auditorium turned toward the backstage wings. The spotlight swept across the stage, catching me in its warm, golden glow.
I felt a rush of heat rise to my cheeks, but I didn't look down. For the first time in my life, I didn't shrink away from the light.
