Chapter 2 - The Hidden DossierThe silence in the backyard broken only by the hum of the pool filter felt like a physical weight pressing down on the Holloway family.

Brielle took two panicked steps toward Preston, her fingers clutching his arm so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Preston... what is he talking about?! You told me Audrey was barren! You told me she spent seven years failing to conceive!"

Preston didn't answer her. He couldn't. His storm-gray eyes were locked onto my twins, his mind desperately trying to compute the reality unfolding before him.

Four years ago, when our divorce was finalized, Preston and Cynthia had orchestrated a quiet, malicious rumor campaign across Charlotte, claiming I had been discarded because I was incapable of giving the Holloway family an heir. I had chosen not to fight their lies in public, walking away with my dignity, my maiden name, and a private medical truth I had kept hidden to protect myself.

Marcus Vance pulled a thick, red-sealed leather binder from his coat, sliding it flat onto the head table right beside the untouched baby shower gifts.

"Brielle," Marcus spoke softly, his voice sharp as a razor. "Since your husband loves sharing public declarations about reproductive history, perhaps you should read page twelve of the certified medical audit from Saint Jude’s Reproductive Center, dated five years ago."

Brielle’s breath hitched. She reached out trembling fingers, pulling the leather binder toward her.

Preston lunged forward, his face contorted in frantic panic. "DON'T TOUCH THAT, BRIELLE!"

"Touch it, Brielle," I said smoothly, looking at my ex-husband with an absolute, clean, weightless pity. "Read the results your husband paid fifty thousand dollars to bury during our divorce proceedings."

Brielle flipped the heavy pages. Her eyes scanned the official lab headers, the signatures of three board-certified endocrinologists, and the bold black text near the bottom of the page:

PATIENT: PRESTON HOLLOWAY

DIAGNOSIS: SEVERE AZOOSPERMIA (COMPLETE REPRODUCTIVE STERILITY)

PROGNOSIS: IRREVERSIBLE / ZERO VIABLE SPERM COUNT

NOTE: PATIENT WAS INFORMED OF PERMANENT STERILITY IN MARCH 2021.

Brielle stopped breathing.

The color drained from her face so completely she looked as if she were about to faint. She looked down at the document, then looked at the rounded stomach beneath her white lace dress, and finally turned her head slowly toward Preston.

"Severe... sterility...?" Brielle whispered, her voice trembling violently. "March 2021...? You... you knew before you even met me?!"

The thirty guests in the backyard gasped in collective, unanimous shock. High-society matriarchs covered their mouths with their silk scarves, while corporate investors stared at Preston as if he were a poisonous insect.

Preston thrashed backward against the cake table, knocking over a tower of crystal flutes, his face an ugly, paper-white mask of sweat and terror.

"Brielle... listen to me!" Preston panicked, reaching his hands out toward her. "The test was wrong! The doctors were mistaken!"

"The test was repeated three times by federal auditors, Preston," Bridget Colton—my lead managing legal counsel, who had just stepped through the gate—announced deadpan. "And while you were spending four years lying to your family and accusing Audrey of being broken, Audrey underwent private IVF treatments using an anonymous donor from her late father's estate trust, giving birth to her healthy twin boys."

Brielle backed away from Preston as if he were covered in plague, tears streaming down her face as she looked at her mother-in-law, Cynthia, who was hiding her face in her hands.

"You knew..." Brielle sobbed, looking at Cynthia. "You both knew he couldn't have children... and you let him publicly humiliate Audrey while setting me up to be his cover!"
