Chapter 3 - The Penthouse on Fifth AvenueBy 2:00 AM, the black bulletproof Maybach had glided through a private security gate and parked deep in the subterranean garage of a limestone monolith overlooking Central Park.

When the private elevator opened directly onto the penthouse foyer, I felt like I had stepped onto another planet.
Floor-to-ceiling glass walls framed a breathtaking, panoramic view of the glittering Manhattan skyline and the dark, silent canopy of Central Park. The interior was a masterclass in modern luxury—polished concrete floors, minimalist dark walnut furnishings, and custom contemporary art that looked like it belonged in the MoMA.
“This is… excessive,” I murmured, walking slowly toward the glass wall, watching the distant headlights crawl across the avenues below.
“This is secure,” Damon corrected, walking up behind me. He shrugged off his suit jacket, tossing it over a minimalist leather armchair, revealing the crisp white shirt underneath with its sleeves rolled up to his forearms. “Your apartment in Brooklyn has a front lock that sticks and a fire escape that hasn't been inspected since the Clinton administration. Effective tonight, you and Lily live here.”
I whipped around, my protective instincts flaring up instantly. “Wait, hold on. We agreed to a three-month arrangement, Damon! We didn't talk about uprooting my daughter’s life and moving her into a Bond villain’s lair!”
“It’s not a lair, it’s a residence,” Damon replied smoothly, walking over to the wet bar to pour two glasses of sparkling water. “And Lily is already asleep in the master guest suite down the hall. My security detail picked up you and your neighbor Mrs. Gable thirty minutes after we left the Plaza. Mrs. Gable is currently enjoying a guest suite on the floor below with a stocked mini-bar and a television bigger than her living room.”
My jaw dropped. I stared at him in absolute disbelief. “You kidnapped my babysitter and my four-year-old daughter while we were still at the gala?!”
“Relocated,” Damon corrected calmly, handing me a glass of water. “For their safety. Julian is desperate, and desperate men do stupid things when they realize they’ve just insulted the wrong person. I wasn't going to leave you or Lily exposed in Brooklyn while I finalized my legal filings.”
I took the glass, my hands shaking slightly not out of fear, but from the overwhelming, dizzying reality of my new existence. I wanted to be angry with him for taking control of my life without asking, but deep down, a quiet, shameful part of me felt an immense, profound wave of relief. For four years, I had carried the entire burden of protecting Lily all by myself. I had been so tired. So bone-weary tired of fighting every single battle alone.
“You’re terrifying, you know that?” I whispered, taking a sip of the cold water.
A slow, warm smile spread across Damon’s face, transforming his usually severe features into something strikingly handsome. “So I’ve been told. But you’re going to get used to it.”
The next morning, the sunlight flooding through the penthouse glass woke me up before my alarm ever could.
I sat up in a king-sized bed so soft it felt like sleeping on a cloud. The sheets were pure silk, smelling faintly of clean linen and expensive cologne. For a terrifying second, I forgot where I was. Then the memories of the previous night rushed back in a tidal wave.
I threw off the covers, quickly dressing in the fresh clothes that had been neatly laid out in the walk-in closet—a pair of tailored trousers and a soft cashmere sweater.
When I walked out into the massive open-concept kitchen, I stopped dead in my tracks.
Lily was sitting at the marble island, wearing matching pink pajamas, happily eating a plate of artisanal blueberry pancakes with maple syrup. Sitting across from her, wearing a simple black t-shirt that showed off the lean muscle of his arms, was Damon Vance—the most feared venture capitalist in New York—expertly flipping a pancake on a copper skillet.
“Mommy!” Lily squealed, dropping her fork and scrambling off the barstool to run over and hug my legs. “Mr. Damon made pancakes! And he has a dog! Well, a robotic dog that cleans the floors, but it’s super cool!”
I looked down at Lily, her bright hazel eyes shining with absolute happiness, completely unfazed by the fact that she was currently eating breakfast in a multi-million-dollar penthouse on Fifth Avenue.
I looked up at Damon. He smiled warmly, plating the final pancake and setting the skillet aside.
“Morning, Emily,” Damon said smoothly, walking over and pouring a fresh cup of dark roast coffee, sliding it across the marble counter toward my usual spot. “Sleep well?”
“I slept like I haven't in four years,” I admitted honestly, picking up my coffee mug. I crouched down to Lily’s eye level. “Did you sleep okay, sweetie?”
“Best night ever!” Lily beamed. “And Mr. Damon says I have my own playroom down the hall with a giant castle!”
I shot Damon a sharp, warning look. He just raised an eyebrow innocently, leaning against the counter with his coffee cup.
“We need to talk,” I told Damon quietly, standing back up and gesturing toward the far corner of the living room away from Lily’s hearing range.
Damon followed me silently, leaning against the glass railing that overlooked Central Park.
“What is all this, Damon?” I asked, keeping my voice low. “Pancakes, playrooms, security details? This isn't just playing fake fiancées for a few public events. You’re turning our lives upside down.”
“I’m keeping you safe, and I’m giving your daughter the life she deserves,” Damon replied, his voice calm, steady, and utterly immovable. “The legal filings against Julian’s family went public at 8:00 AM. Their stock dropped fourteen percent within twenty minutes. By noon, Julian’s father is going to strip him of his executive title and banish him to their London branch. He will never, ever be able to touch you or Lily again.”

I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. “You did all that before breakfast?”
“I like to be efficient,” Damon said simply. He stepped closer, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my pulse race. “Now, your old life is officially over, Emily. Today, we start the next phase. And by tonight, the entire city is going to know that you belong with me.”
