Chapter 1 - The Gathering StormThe quiet ticking of the grandfather clock in my living room felt like a countdown to something catastrophic.

Alexander stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the rain-slicked streets of Chicago. He hadn't removed his worn leather gloves. His broad shoulders, hardened by twenty-five years in elite Special Operations, were locked in rigid, terrifying tension.

Sofia sat on the sofa wrapped in my wool blanket, a warm mug of tea untouched in her hands. Her breathing was shallow, every small shift in her seat causing her to wince from the deep bruises Carmen’s friends had left across her ribs.

"Alexander," I spoke softly, stepping up beside my ex-husband. "What are you going to do?"

He didn't turn his head immediately. When he did, his gray eyes—the same eyes that had once looked at me with tenderness during our youth—were flat, dark, and devoid of any human hesitation.

"Carmen Robles built a fortune running illegal gambling rings and predatory real estate scams in the West Side," Alexander said, his baritone voice a low, raspy rumble. "She thinks because she bought off a few precinct captains and hired some neighborhood enforcers that she’s untouchable. She thinks she broke a frightened girl."

He looked over at Sofia. The coldness in his face cracked for a fraction of a second, revealing an abyss of agonizing guilt and protective rage. Ten years of silence—ten years of estrangement after our painful divorce—evaporated into nothingness the moment he saw his blood spilled on a bridal gown.

"Dad," Sofia whimpered, her voice cracking. "Javier... he took my phone. He took my ring, my purse, and the spare keys to the condo. They’re probably at the condo right now."

Alexander reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a sleek, encrypted satellite phone. He tapped three digits.

"Major," a deep, disciplined voice answered on the first ring through the speaker.

"Gather the team," Alexander commanded quietly. "Active deployment protocol. Location: The Grand Plaza Residences, North Tower. We have a hostile takeover in progress."

"Understood, Colonel. Response time: ten minutes."

I grabbed Alexander’s arm, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Alexander, no weapons. If you end up in a federal prison, Carmen wins."

Alexander looked down at my hand on his sleeve. For the first time in ten years, he placed his warm palm over mine.

"I didn't spend twenty-five years leading Task Force 88 to break the law, Elena," Alexander murmured softly. "I'm going to use the law to crush them. But first, I'm going to make sure Javier Robles understands what happens when a coward touches my daughter."

He walked over to Sofia, dropping onto one knee before her. He reached out, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her swollen ear.

"Stay with your mother, baby girl," Alexander promised, his voice dripping with an absolute, terrifying vow. "By sunrise, you will never have to fear those people again."
