Chapter 2 - The Fortress on the RidgeThe black armored SUV glided silently through the rain-drenched gates of the Vance Estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, at 11:30 PM.

The estate was massive—a sprawling stone manor perched high on a rocky ridge overlooking the dark waters of Long Island Sound. High stone security walls, high-definition security cameras, and broad-shouldered guards carrying tactical sidearms patrolled the long gravel driveway.

Inside the leather back seat of the vehicle, nine-month-old Leo was fast asleep in my lap, his soft cheek resting against my sweater, his tiny hand still firmly grasping my index finger.

I sat stiffly against the door, my heart beating a erratic rhythm. Beside me sat Dante, his dark wool coat unbuttoned, his gray eyes fixed on my face in the passing amber light of the driveway lanterns.

"You don't need to look at me like I'm going to jump out of the moving car, Mr. Vance," I said quietly, keeping my voice low so as not to wake the sleeping baby. "I wouldn't drop your son."

"I know you wouldn't," Dante replied softly, his voice smooth and deep. "Leo knows who is safe. He knew the second he looked at you."

The car stopped outside the grand mahogany front doors of the mansion.

Dante stepped out first, opening my door himself, holding out his hand to help me down. I hesitated before placing my fingers in his broad, warm palm. The contrast between his dangerous, tattooed hand and my small, pale fingers was striking, but his grip was surprisingly gentle.

We walked into the grand foyer—a cathedral of dark marble, soaring arches, and crystal chandeliers.

Standing near the grand staircase was an older woman with a strict, dignified posture, dressed in an immaculate dark housekeeper's dress.

"Mr. Vance," the housekeeper spoke, her eyes widening in total, speech-bound shock as she looked from my face to the sleeping child in my arms. "My God... who... who is this girl?"

"This is Elina, Mrs. Gable," Dante announced cleanly, taking off his wet coat and handing it to a guard. "She is Leo's new primary caregiver. Prepare the master nursery suite in the east wing immediately."

Mrs. Gable stared at me as if she had seen a ghost rising from the grave. Her hands shook as she clutched her apron. "Mr. Vance... she looks... she looks just like Miss Isabella..."

"That is none of your concern, Mrs. Gable," Dante commanded, his voice dropping into an icy register that made the older woman instantly bow her head. "Prepare the room."

Dante guided me up the grand marble staircase toward the private residential wing.

The nursery was breathtaking—a massive, sunlit suite decorated in soft cream and gold, featuring a hand-carved wooden crib, velvet rocking chairs, and an adjoining private bedroom for the caregiver.

I walked over to the crib, carefully laying little Leo down onto the soft organic cotton mattress. I tried to pull my index finger away, but his tiny fingers tightened instinctively around my skin, a small, troubled frown appearing on his sleeping forehead.

"He won't let go," I whispered softly, turning my head to look at Dante, who was standing in the doorway.

Dante walked slowly across the plush rug, stopping beside the crib. He leaned down, his broad hand coming up to rest gently over mine, his warm fingers covering my hand as we both looked down at his sleeping son.

"He thinks if he lets go," Dante murmured, his voice cracking slightly with a raw, agonizing emotion, "you'll disappear like his mother did."

May you like

I looked up into Dante’s gray eyes—seeing, for the first time, not a terrifying mafia Don, but a broken, grieving father who was desperately trying to save his child from the dark.

"I won't disappear, Dante," I promised softly, the words slipping out before I could think. "I'm right here."
