Chapter 3 - The Collapse of Vance & WhitmoreWhen a partner realizes his co-conspirator has brought federal marshals to their front door, loyalty evaporates in ten seconds.

8:00 a.m. the following morning.
The glass-and-steel skyscraper housing the prestigious law firm of Vance & Whitmore overlooked Wall Street.
Marcus Vance—senior managing partner, high-society fixture, and Daniel’s lifelong best friend—sat at his corner mahogany desk, sipping an espresso while reading the morning edition of the Wall Street Journal.
The heavy double doors of his office burst open without a knock.
In stepped my father, wearing a classic dark trench coat, accompanied by two agents from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and two senior officers from the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
I walked in right behind them, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and gold hoop earrings, holding a leather briefcase.
Marcus jumped up from his chair, dropping his espresso cup onto his blotter. "What is the meaning of this?! You can't just storm into a private law firm!"
"Marcus Vance," the lead IRS agent stated, pulling a federal search warrant from his jacket. "Pursuant to Title 18 of the United States Code, we are executing an emergency freeze and search seizure on all accounts, servers, and physical ledgers associated with Vance Global Holdings."
Marcus went dead pale. His eyes flicked frantically to me, his hands shaking as he reached for his desk phone. "This... this is an outrage! Emily, what are you doing?! Daniel is in jail over a club bill error! We can settle the Aurum House invoice privately!"
"It isn't about the club bill anymore, Marcus," I said, leaning my hands on his mahogany desk, staring into his panicked eyes. "It's about the fourteen point six million dollars you and Daniel siphoned from Hayes Logistics over the past thirty-six months."
"I don't know what you're talking about!" Marcus stuttered, backing away toward the window. "Daniel handled all the logistics accounts! I had no operational oversight!"
My father chuckled softly, pulling a flash drive from his pocket and tossing it onto the desk.
"That drive contains five years of encrypted wire transfers signed by your personal digital key, Mr. Vance," my father said, his voice ringing like a iron bell in the quiet office. "Daniel confessed twenty minutes ago in his holding cell in exchange for a plea attempt. He gave you up as the mastermind."
Marcus’s jaw dropped. "He... he blamed me?!"
"He said you came up with the shell company idea," I lied smoothly, watching Marcus’s face break into absolute betrayal. "He said you promised him sixty percent of the stolen funds once our divorce was finalized."
"That lying snake!" Marcus screamed, slamming his fist onto his desk, his composure completely shattering. "It was his idea! Daniel came to me three years ago saying he wanted to strip Hayes Logistics clean before he dumped you for Vanessa! He forged my digital signature on the Cayman documents!"
The IRS agent smiled thinly, pulling out a voice recorder. "Thank you for the verbal admission, Mr. Vance. Agents, secure the hard drives."
Marcus froze, realizing in one horrifying second that he had just walked straight into the trap my father and I had laid for him.
As federal agents began disconnecting his computers and placing evidence tags on his files, two police officers stepped forward to cuff Marcus Vance.

I picked up my briefcase, looking at the man who had spent three years pretending to be my friend while helping my husband steal my life.
"Enjoy the trial, Marcus," I said softly. "I hear federal court moves much faster than divorce court."
