Chapter 1 - The Public TabWhen a arrogant ex-husband spends nearly a million dollars on stolen status, he learns that a card decline isn't an error—it's his arrest warrant.

The dining room of Aurum House went so quiet you could hear the crystal chandeliers humming under the ambient recessed lights.
Daniel Whitmore’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson as he snatched his matte-black business card out of the waiter’s white-gloved hand.
"This is ridiculous!" Daniel shouted, his voice carrying easily over the muted lounge jazz music across the VIP room. "I am a senior partner at Whitmore & Vance! My wife—my ex-wife—is the primary holder of this account! This card has a two-million-dollar rolling line of credit!"
The head floor manager, a sharp, impeccably dressed Frenchman named Henri, stepped forward, placing himself between Daniel and the tray holding the $640,000 sapphire necklace.
"Mr. Whitmore," Henri said, his voice dropping into a razor-thin, cold tone of corporate professionalism. "The card was not merely declined due to insufficient funds. The terminal flagged the account as an unauthorized attempt following a total corporate authorization revocation issued at 3:15 p.m. today."
Vanessa Cole gasped, her red lips parting in shock as she pulled her hands away from the glittering sapphire necklace. "Daniel! What is he talking about?! You told me you had full access to the Hayes Logistics corporate accounts!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel hissed through his teeth, his forehead breaking into a cold, greasy sweat. He pulled his leather wallet out, frantically pulling out card after card—his personal credit card, his emergency travel card, even the joint account card we had shared during our marriage. "Use these! All of them! Split the tab across five cards!"
Henri took the five cards with a tight, artificial nod and walked back to the central POS terminal near the private lounge bar.
The surrounding tables—filled with Manhattan billionaires, Wall Street executives, and media moguls—turned their heads, whispering behind their silk napkins and champagne flutes.
BZZZZZT.
BZZZZZT.
BZZZZZT.
Every single swipe produced the same sharp, high-pitched rejection chime.
Henri returned three minutes later. He didn't offer the cards back. Instead, two burly, dark-suited private security guards from Aurum House stepped up behind him.
"Mr. Whitmore," Henri announced, his voice ringing clearly across the room. "Every card you presented has had its PIN altered and security credentials locked by the primary owner, Mrs. Emily Hayes. You currently owe Aurum House nine hundred and ninety-eight thousand dollars for high-end spirits, catering, private salon reservation, and opened luxury inventory."
"I'll pay you tomorrow!" Daniel yelled, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. "Call my office! Call my bank!"
"Aurum House does not offer credit to non-members, sir," Henri replied coldly. "And since your corporate membership was officially terminated by Mrs. Hayes two hours ago, you are currently an unregistered trespasser incurring a felony debt on private premises."
Henri gestured to the entrance.
Stepping through the frosted glass doors of Aurum House were two uniformed NYPD officers, accompanied by a sharp-looking man holding a leather brief folder.
"Daniel Whitmore?" the lead officer asked.
Daniel froze, his breath catching in his throat. "Yes...?"
"You are being detained under suspicion of grand larceny, credit card fraud, and theft of services exceeding five hundred thousand dollars," the officer stated, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent."
Vanessa shrieked, jumping out of her seat, backing away into the corner. "I don't know him! I'm just his guest! I didn't order the wine!"
As the cold steel cuffs clicked tightly around Daniel’s wrists in front of sixty laughing elite guests, his phone buzzed in his jacket pocket.
The lead officer pulled the phone out to log it into evidence.
