Chapter 2 - Forty Thousand Feet of SilenceInside the cabin of the Gulfstream G700, the atmosphere was thick with self-congratulatory triumph.

Carter Sterling swirled the amber liquid in his crystal tumbler, leaning back into the cream-colored leather seat that Samantha had just vacated. Across the aisle, his mother, Eleanor Sterling, was sipping sparkling water with a look of severe, vindictive satisfaction etched across her aristocratic face.
— It’s about time you put her in her place, Carter, — Eleanor murmured, adjusting her diamond brooch. — Ever since we allowed her into this family, she has acted as though she owns the business. A spoiled heiress who contributes nothing to your success, constantly lurking around the boardroom as if her family's old money made her a tech pioneer.
Khloe leaned in closer, resting a manicured hand near Carter’s knee, her voice dripping with syrupy concern. — Exactly, Mr. Sterling. Mrs. Sterling is lovely, of course, but she just doesn't understand the high-pressure environment of a global tech firm. You need someone by your side who understands operations, who stays up late, who supports your vision without dragging you down with petty jealousy.
Carter smiled, a smug, arrogant curve of his lips that I had once mistaken for confidence. He reached out and patted Khloe’s hand approvingly.
— You’re right, Khloe. Samantha has grown entirely too comfortable. She thinks because her name was on some early-stage incorporation paperwork four years ago, she’s indispensable. But Sterling Tech is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise now. We’ve outgrown her amateurish presence.
At the front of the cabin, the lead pilot’s voice crackled smoothly over the intercom.
— Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached our cruising altitude of forty-one thousand feet. Flight time to Zurich is estimated at seven hours and twenty minutes. We hope you enjoy the flight.
As the seatbelt sign chimed off, several senior executives unbuckled and began wandering toward the front lounge area, holding flutes of champagne and laughing loudly about the upcoming European venture capital acquisitions.
Carter took a long sip of his whiskey, feeling invincible. He had just secured a fifty-million-dollar bridge loan, his stock options were vesting at record highs, his company was preparing for its IPO, and he had successfully reminded his wife of her subordinate position.
He had never felt more powerful.
Then, exactly fifteen minutes into the flight, every single screen embedded in the leather seatbacks flickered violently.
The glowing blue corporate logo of Sterling Tech—a stylized diamond symbol representing their proprietary AI neural network—suddenly vanished from all thirty displays.
In its place, a stark, blood-red warning banner flashed across every monitor simultaneously:
CRITICAL SYSTEM ERROR: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY REVOCATION IN PROGRESS.
Carter frowned, sitting upright and spilling a few drops of whiskey onto his tailored trousers. — What is this? Is there a diagnostic test running?
One of the senior vice presidents, whose seatback screen was now scrolling text at an alarming speed, went completely pale. He dropped his champagne glass, shattering it across the plush carpet.
— Carter... look at your dashboard terminal! Look at the master console now!
Carter scrambled out of his seat, rushing to the main forward navigation and server interface console connected directly to the corporate cloud in Silicon Valley. His fingers flew across the glass-touch terminal, attempting to log in with his master administrator credentials.

His heart slammed against his ribs. He tried his backup root password.
ACCESS DENIED. USER IDENTITY: CARTER STERLING. PRIVILEGE LEVEL: REVOKED.
— This is impossible, — Carter stammered, his face draining of all color, beads of sweat breaking out across his forehead. — I am the CEO! I am the founder! Run an override command!
Khloe rushed over, clutching her tablet with trembling fingers. — Mr. Sterling! Look at the stock exchange feeds! Our pre-market institutional trading... it’s crashing! The valuation servers are offline!
Before Carter could scream an order, his personal smartphone—resting safely in his breast pocket—vibrated with a harsh, relentless buzzing. He snatched it out, tapping the glowing screen.
A single push notification from the federal patent office and the state corporate registry lit up his display:
NOTICE OF ASSIGNMENT REVOCATION: Patents US-8892011 through US-8892024 (Neural Processing Core Architecture) have been legally transferred back to Primary Assignee and Sole Legal Proprietor: Pham Thu Ha (Trustee, Sterling Family Legacy Trust).
Carter stared at the screen, the world spinning violently around him.

The foundational patents. The core algorithms that made Sterling Tech worth three billion dollars. They didn't belong to him. They had always belonged to Samantha’s family trust, licensed to him under a conditional operating agreement that could be terminated instantly upon a breach of personal or operational trust.
And he had just breached it by kicking the legal owner out of her own seat at forty thousand feet.
