Chapter 3 - The Tower of CardsThe library went so quiet you could hear the tick of the grandfather clock in the corner.

Julian raised his head slowly, his bloodshot eyes staring at his bride in absolute, disbelieving horror. "What... what did you just say, Rachel?"
"She lied, Julian," Rachel stated, her tone deadpan and precise. "Vanessa lost her pregnancy six months before your father wrote that twelve-million-dollar check. She was never twenty-one weeks pregnant with your triplets when she sat in this library."
Margaret dropped her handkerchief, her jaw sagging open. "No... no, that's impossible! The boys! Liam, Mason, and Oliver! She brought them home from the hospital! We paid the medical bills! We set up their trust funds!"
I stood up from the velvet sofa, holding Grace's small hand in mine, looking straight at the trembling bride.
"Where did you get the three boys, Vanessa?" I asked softly, every word dropping like a stone into deep water.
Vanessa’s face went from pale to a terrifying, translucent ash. She backed away toward the window, her hands clawing at the lace of her bridal gown, her breath coming in wild, animalistic gasps.
"Julian..." Vanessa stammered, tears spilling over her mascara, ruining her airbrushed makeup. "Julian, listen to me! I did it for us! You loved me! You were going to leave her anyway! But your father... your father said he would only support you if there was an heir!"
"Where did you get the children?!" Julian screamed, leaping out of his leather chair, his hands clenching into fists, his voice shaking the glass windows.
A sharp, heavy knock echoed at the library door.
Two uniformed officers from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department stepped into the room, accompanied by a woman wearing a navy suit from the New York Department of Children and Family Services.
"Vanessa Blake?" the lead officer asked, pulling a paper from his coat pocket.
Vanessa let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek, hiding her face behind her hands.
"Miss Blake," the child services officer announced calmly, "we are executing an emergency protective custody order issued by the State of New York. Following an international investigation into an illegal adoption ring operating out of a private clinic in Eastern Europe, forensic records confirm that the three five-year-old boys in your custody were illegally trafficked from an orphanage in Romania five years ago."
Margaret let out a horrific, blood-curdling scream and collapsed unconscious onto the carpet floorboards.
Charles sat frozen in his leather executive chair, his face completely drained of life, his hands trembling violently as he watched the officers gently guide the three five-year-old boys out of the library.
Vanessa didn't fight as the deputy placed heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists. She sobbed uncontrollably, her thirty-thousand-dollar wedding gown dragging through the dirt near the terrace doors as she was escorted off the property to face federal human trafficking and corporate fraud charges.

Julian stood in the center of the room, looking at the empty spot where his bride had stood three minutes ago.
The empire he had traded his wife for had dissolved into absolute, disgusting ruin in less than an hour.
