Chapter 5 - The Truth in the Marble HallInside the top-floor conference room of Vance & Associates on Michigan Avenue, the air was still, quiet, and heavy with history.

Luca sat at the long mahogany table.
He looked hollowed out. His tailored suit was slightly loose, his dark hair messy, dark purple circles carved beneath his gray eyes. He hadn't slept in two weeks. Beside him sat two thick leather binders containing corporate restructuring decrees.
When I pushed open the heavy glass door, Luca stood up instantly.
He didn't speak. He simply stood there, his long arms hanging at his sides, looking at me with an expression of total, absolute surrender.
I stepped into the room, setting my leather bag on the table, keeping three feet of space between us.
"Is it true, Luca?" I asked softly. "About Evelyn's father?"
Luca reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a sealed certified document stamped by the State Attorney General’s Office.
"Arthur Shaw was arrested at six o'clock this morning," Luca said, his baritone raspy and low. "He confessed to paying off the lab technician in 2021. The clinic records were falsified, Nia. You were never infertile. You were completely healthy."
A heavy, suffocating sob tore from my throat before I could stop it.
Five years of self-doubt, five years of carrying the silent shame that I had failed as a woman, five years of believing my body was broken—all of it erased by a single sheet of paper.
I covered my face with my hands, my shoulders shaking as tears spilled over my fingers.
In a fraction of a second, Luca crossed the room.
He didn't pull me into a tight grip. He dropped onto his knees right there on the hardwood floor in front of my chair, his broad, warm hands reaching up to gently, reverently hold my wrists, pulling my hands away from my tear-streaked face.
"I'm sorry, Nia," Luca wept, tears streaming down his own face, cutting clean tracks through the stubble on his cheeks. "I'm so sorry... I should have protected you. I should have questioned the reports. I should have fought for us instead of letting my pride drive me away."
I looked down at the most feared billionaire in Chicago—kneeling at my feet, weeping like a broken child, reaching out to hold the hem of my coat.

"You broke my heart, Luca," I whispered through my tears.
"I know," Luca choked out, bringing my hands up to press his lips against my knuckles. "And I will spend every remaining day of my life earning the right to ask for your forgiveness. I don't care about the company. I don't care about the money. I just want my wife back. I want my children."
