Chapter 2 - The Document in the EnvelopeThe entire front row of the ballroom went dead, breathlessly quiet.

You could hear the soft hum of the air conditioning eighty feet above the stage.
Daniel took two clumsy, frantic steps down from the elevated head table, his six-foot-two frame moving as if he were walking through deep water. His hands—hands that had signed multi-million-dollar construction deeds—were shaking so violently he had to press them against his thigh.
"Grace...?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, terrifying realization as he looked at the six-year-old girl standing beside me. "Is... is that Grace?"
"Her name is Grace Vance Carter, Daniel," I spoke cleanly. My deep voice carried an unyielding, velvet power that echoed off the high ceiling. "She is the daughter you threw out into the rain six years ago with a hundred-and-three-degree fever and two hundred dollars on the floor."
A collective, horrified gasp swept through the four hundred elite guests.
"That's a lie!" Vanessa screamed, rushing down from the stage, her face flushed with frantic, hysterical rage as she grabbed Daniel’s arm. "She's lying, Daniel! She's trying to ruin our ten-year anniversary! She was a broke, crazy woman who abandoned you!"
Lucas Vance didn't raise his voice. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulling out a thick, sealed parchment folder bound by red silk ribbon and a gold notary seal from six years ago.
He unsealed the folder, pulling out a single sheet of heavy legal paper, holding it up beneath the bright chandelier light directly in front of Daniel and Vanessa.
"Mr. Carter," Lucas Vance spoke flatly. "In May six years ago, forty-eight hours before you attempted to evict your wife, you signed a secondary corporate guarantee with the Eleanor Vance Trust to secure a ten-million-dollar bank loan for Carter Infrastructure."
Daniel’s eyes widened in total, speech-bound horror.
"Under Section 14-B of that notarized guarantee," Lucas continued, reading the black typography aloud into the quiet ballroom, "In the event of unfaithful marital abandonment or illegal eviction of the primary heir, Emily Vance Carter, all land titles, equity assets, and corporate developments funded by the Eleanor Vance Trust shall immediately revert to the sole ownership of Emily Vance Carter and her issue, stripping Daniel Carter of all voting rights."
Vanessa stared at the signature at the bottom of the page.
It was Daniel’s unmistakable, sharp signature, signed in dark blue ink beside my grandmother's personal notary seal.
"DANIEL!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice reaching a high, piercing scream that echoed off the marble walls. "WHAT DID YOU SIGN?! TELL ME THIS IS A FORGERY! TELL ME SHE DOESN'T OWN THE COMPANY!"
Daniel dropped flat onto his knees right on the marble floorboards before the front table.
The sight of the celebrated billionaire crime boss of Chicago real estate kneeling in his six-thousand-dollar tuxedo in front of his ex-wife and daughter made the surrounding news photographers rapidly snap dozens of flashing pictures.

"Emily..." Daniel weeping, tears cutting clean tracks through his pale face. "My God, Emily... forgive me... I didn't know... I didn't realize the trust owned the land..."
"You didn't care about the land, Daniel," I answered softly, looking down at his groveling frame with a cold, absolute disdain that cut deeper than any blade. "You only cared when you realized the mistress who replaced me didn't bring you a single cent."
