Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Collapse and the Ex-Wife's BetrayalWithin seventy-two hours, the immaculate, carefully curated facade of Álvaro’s life began to peel away like cheap wallpaper in a damp basement.

The freeze on his corporate accounts didn't just inconvenience him; it triggered an immediate audit by the Spanish tax authority (Agencia Tributaria), prompted by Marta Olmedo’s meticulously compiled dossier of financial discrepancies. Investors who had lined up for Álvaro’s flagship real estate project in Marbella abruptly pulled out when news of the federal investigation leaked to the financial press.
And Claudia? Claudia’s loyalty—built entirely on mutual greed and shared manipulation—evaporated the moment the money stopped flowing.
On Friday afternoon, while I was meeting with a pediatric counselor to help Lucía process the transition, Claudia marched directly into Marta Olmedo’s law offices uninvited, demanding to turn over her own stash of documents in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
Marta called me on speakerphone while Claudia sat across from her, weeping mascara-stained tears of self-pity.
“Elena, you have to understand, I was just a pawn in Álvaro’s game!” Claudia wailed through the phone speaker. “He forced me to set up those offshore shell accounts! He told me you were unstable and that he was going to leave you anyway! I have the original signed agreements where he plotted to strip your name from everything!”
I listened to her desperate excuses, feeling not a shred of anger, only a profound, detached amusement.
“Save your tears for the judge, Claudia,” I said quietly into the phone. “You helped him terrorize my daughter for five years. You were happy to take the stolen money as long as you felt like the ‘real’ wife. You deserve every single consequence coming your way.”
“Elena, please! We’re both mothers!” Claudia sobbed.
“No, Claudia,” I replied coldly. “You are an accomplice. And my daughter and I are done cleaning up the wreckage of your toxic little family.”
I hung up the phone.
When Álvaro finally tracked me down on Saturday morning—having cornered me in the parking lot of Lucía’s new ballet school despite the restraining order—he looked ten years older. His expensive Brioni suit was rumpled, his hair unbrushed, and his eyes wild with a mixture of rage and sheer, unadulterated terror.
“You destroyed me,” Álvaro hissed, grabbing my arm as I unlocked my car door. “You ruined my company, you turned my son against me, you put me through hell... you ungrateful bitch!”
Before I could even open my mouth to scream for the private security guards patrolling the school perimeter, a heavy, authoritative hand clamped down on Álvaro’s shoulder.
It was Inspector Ramirez of the National Police’s Financial Crimes Unit, flanked by two uniformed officers.
“Álvaro Robles, you are under arrest for violation of a judicial restraining order, intimidation of a witness, and contempt of court,” the inspector barked smoothly, clicking the cold steel handcuffs around Álvaro’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
Álvaro struggled blindly, his face turning purple with rage as he was shoved against the hood of his own abandoned BMW. He glared at me with pure venom, screaming over the wail of the police siren:
“You think you’ve won, Elena?! You’re nothing without me! You’ll rot in obscurity while I take everything back!”

I watched as they shoved him into the back of the patrol car, slamming the door shut on his pathetic, shattered empire.
I didn't answer him. I just got into my car, adjusted the rearview mirror, and drove home to my daughter.
