Chapter 5 - The Tables TurnThe interrogation room at the local sheriff’s substation in Lake Placid was stark, smelling faintly of old floor wax and cheap disinfectant. Underneath the harsh fluorescent lighting, Philip Hinton sat at the metal table, his expensive silk bathrobe replaced by a standard temporary holding uniform. His hair was disheveled, and the arrogant confidence that had defined him for years had completely dissolved into a sweaty, panicked mess.

The heavy steel door swung open, and Richard Vance—representing Demi as lead litigation counsel alongside Paige—walked into the room, carrying a thick leather briefcase. He pulled out a chair opposite Philip, sat down, and calmly placed a pen on the table.
“Mr. Hinton,” Richard said smoothly, folding his hands. “I trust the deputies treated you with adequate courtesy during your transport from the property?”
Philip glared across the table, his chest heaving with anger. “This is an outrage! You have no right to barge into my vacation home! This is a civil dispute, not a criminal matter! I demand to speak to my own attorney!”
“You can demand whatever you like, Philip,” Richard replied, opening his briefcase and sliding a series of financial disclosures across the metal table. “However, when you systematically create fraudulent shell corporations to conceal marital assets, forge corporate signatures to dilute your spouse’s equity, and commit bigamous financial fraud across state lines, it graduates rather quickly from a civil dispute to federal white-collar felony territory.”
Philip glanced down at the papers. They were detailed forensic audits of the blind LLC he had used to purchase the Lake Placid house, cross-referenced with wire transfers he had diverted from Hinton Tech’s main revenue streams. Every single transaction was meticulously highlighted in yellow marker.
“Where... where did you get these?” Philip stammered, his voice cracking.
“From your own home server,” Richard said with a calm smile. “You see, Philip, when you set up your home office cloud storage years ago, you were smart enough to encrypt your files. But you made one fatal mistake: you used the same master administrative password that Demi set up for your clinic’s emergency backup system. She didn't even need to hack it; she just logged in using her administrator credentials.”
Philip slumped back in his chair, running a trembling hand over his face. “Demi... she wouldn't... she loved me.”
“She did love you,” Richard corrected sharply. “For five years, while you were playing corporate big shot and carrying on affairs behind her back, she worked long hours at the clinic, paid your medical bills, and supported your ambitions. And how did you reward her? By throwing a cast-iron pot at her head on her thirty-second birthday while screaming demands for food.”
Philip froze. “How do you... how did you know about the pot?”
“Raven’s husband installed security cameras on the exterior of the Lake Placid property that picked up your phone conversations with your mother,” Richard lied smoothly, manufacturing an ironclad psychological pressure point. “And Glenda proudly confessed to the details of the domestic abuse during her police intake interview this morning. Assault, battery, financial fraud, and mail fraud. You’re looking at a minimum of five to ten years in federal prison, Philip.”
The door opened again, and Paige stepped into the room, holding a single sheet of paper. She laid it down right in front of Philip.
“What is this?” Philip whispered, staring at the document.
“It’s a comprehensive settlement and plea-coordination agreement,” Paige said coldly. “Here are your options, Philip: Option A, you contest everything, we let the federal prosecutors rip apart your company, seize the Lake Placid house, liquidate every asset you own, and send you to a maximum-security federal penitentiary for financial crimes and domestic abuse.”
Philip swallowed hard. “And... and Option B?”
“Option B,” Paige continued, sliding a pen toward him, “you sign over one hundred percent ownership of the Lake Placid house to Demi, relinquish all claims to the Rochester apartment, transfer your remaining shares in the commercial supply company to her as punitive restitution, agree to an immediate, uncontested, fault-based divorce with zero spousal support, and we recommend that the district attorney reduce the federal fraud charges to a suspended sentence and probation.”
Philip stared at the paper in absolute disbelief. “You’re taking everything. You’re leaving me with nothing!”
May you like
“Incorrect, Philip,” Paige replied, her voice cutting like glass. “We are leaving you with your freedom. Which is significantly more generous than anything you ever offered Demi.”
Philip looked at Richard, then at Paige, and finally down at the pen in his hand. Realizing he had been completely outmaneuvered, trapped by irrefutable evidence and his own unbridled arrogance, he picked up the pen with a shaking hand and signed his name on the dotted line.
