Chapter 2 - The Silence Before the StormThe afternoon sunlight filtering through the kitchen window of the Rochester apartment cast long, sharp shadows across the linoleum floor. The air was thick with tension, heavy enough to choke. Glenda stood by the kitchen island, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her lips pursed in a thin line of self-righteous fury. She expected tears. She expected yelling, begging, or at the very least, a frantic defense.

Instead, Demi did something that utterly destabilized her. She laughed.
It wasn't a loud, boisterous laugh, but a quiet, low chuckle that carried a chilling edge of absolute finality. Demi picked up the stack of photographs Raven had handed her, carefully tapped them against the granite countertop to align the edges, and slid them back into the large brown envelope.
“You knew,” Demi said softly, her voice remarkably even as she turned her amber eyes toward her mother-in-law. “For how long, Glenda? Six months? A year? Ever since Philip started taking those mysterious 'business trips' to Lake Placid?”
Glenda blinked, momentarily thrown off balance by the lack of hysterics, but quickly recovered her arrogant posture. Her chin shot up. “Don't take that tone with me, Demi! If you had bothered to act like a proper wife instead of locking yourself away with your medical textbooks and clinic charts, my son wouldn't have had to look elsewhere for warmth and affection! A man needs a woman who knows how to keep a home, not a cold paramedic who smells like antiseptic and emergency rooms!”
Raven, standing awkwardly near the open doorway, looked horrified. She shifted her weight from foot to foot, clutching her purse. “I’m sorry, Demi. I shouldn't have intruded on your birthday, but when I saw that woman strutting around your vacation house like she owned it, wearing your clothes, sleeping in your bed... I couldn't keep quiet any longer. You’re a good person. You didn't deserve this.”
Demi walked over to Raven, her steps measured and calm, and gently placed a hand on her arm. “Thank you, Raven. You did the right thing. More than you know. Please, let me walk you out.”
As Demi escorted Raven to the front door, Glenda scoffed loudly behind them. “Go ahead, run off! Cry all you want! But don't think for a second you're getting a dime out of this apartment or Philip's assets. That vacation house in Lake Placid was bought with hard work, and this apartment is registered under family trusts. You came into this marriage with nothing, and you'll leave with nothing!”
Demi closed the door behind Raven and locked it with a deliberate, metallic click. She didn't shout back. She didn't throw anything. She walked back into the living room, picked up the green folder containing her grandmother's inheritance records, the bank wire transfer confirmations, and the original deed, and slipped it into her leather professional tote.
Her phone buzzed aggressively on the coffee table. The screen lit up with Paige’s caller ID. Demi swiped to answer, pressing the phone to her ear.
“Demi? Thank God you answered,” Paige’s voice rushed through the speaker, tight with professional anxiety. “Your text message sounded ominous. What’s going on? Are you safe? Do I need to come over?”
“I’m safe, Paige, but my marriage is officially over,” Demi said, walking toward the bedroom to grab her jacket. “I have the proof. Philip has been living a double life in Lake Placid, and Glenda has been an active co-conspirator. More importantly, I need to know how fast we can freeze our joint assets and initiate a partition action on this apartment.”
On the other end of the line, Paige fell silent for a fraction of a second, the lawyer in her immediately snapping into gear. “A partition action? Demi, this apartment is listed under both your names, but didn't you put down one hundred and forty-five thousand dollars from your Ithaca inheritance for the down payment?”
“Every single cent,” Demi replied, grabbing her keys. “And I have the signed letter where Philip explicitly acknowledged the source of those funds, along with the bank records showing the wire transfer directly from my separate account to the title company.”
“Then we don't just file for divorce,” Paige said, her voice dropping into a sharp, decisive register. “We launch a comprehensive financial freeze. If Philip thinks he can sneak off to Lake Placid with a mistress while his wife pays the bills, he’s about to experience a very rude awakening. Meet me at my office on Main Street in twenty minutes. Bring the green folder.”
“I’m already on my way,” Demi said.

She turned around to find Glenda blocking the hallway, her face mottled with rage. “Where do you think you’re going? Philip will be back tomorrow, and you need to have dinner ready! You can’t just walk out!”
“Watch me, Glenda,” Demi said, her voice cold as ice as she brushed past her mother-in-law. “And enjoy your last night in this apartment. By the time Philip gets back, the locks will be changed, the accounts will be frozen, and neither of you will have a roof over your heads.”
