Chapter 2 - The Wrath of the Master

The metallic echo of the fallen pot died away, leaving a suffocating, dead silence in the service kitchen.
Ashley trembled, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as she stared at Daniel. She had expected him to be thousands of miles away, managing his restaurants in Chicago or negotiating real estate deals in New York for at least another week. She had grown comfortable in her delusion—spending Daniel’s hard-earned cash, throwing lavish weekend parties, and treating Emily like an indentured servant while convincing herself that her brother would never care enough to check in.
Daniel didn't yell. He didn't smash anything or throw his weight around. His silence was infinitely more terrifying. His dark eyes were completely devoid of human warmth, locked onto his sister with a cold, predatory focus that made Ashley take an involuntary step backward, her heel catching the edge of a supply crate.
"Daniel..." Ashley choked out, her voice pitching up in frantic panic. "D-Daniel! You're... you're supposed to be in Chicago! We didn't know you were coming home today—"
"Clearly," Daniel’s voice cut through the humid air like a razor blade. It was low, steady, and dripping with lethal venom.
He didn't look at Ashley any longer. His gaze shifted slowly down to Emily, who was still frozen by the sink, tears finally spilling over her red-rimmed eyelids and cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks.
Without a word, Daniel crossed the small kitchen. Ignoring the expensive Italian leather shoes he wore, he stepped right through the dirty dishwater pooling on the floor, stopped directly in front of Emily, and reached out.
Emily flinched instinctively, raising a trembling, sudsy hand as if bracing herself to be struck—a horrifying reflex that sent a fresh spike of murderous rage straight through Daniel’s chest.
Instead of hurting her, Daniel gently caught her raw, swollen hands in his own. His calloused fingers traced the red, blistered skin where the harsh chemicals had eaten away at her cuticles. He pulled her hands up, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her knuckles, ignoring the grease and soap smeared across her skin.
"I'm sorry," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking for the first time as he looked into her eyes. "I'm so, so sorry, my love."
Emily let out a ragged, broken sob, collapsing against his chest. Her arms wrapped tightly around his waist, burying her face in the fabric of his expensive shirt, staining the fine cotton with dirt and soapy water. "Daniel... they took everything... they locked my phone in the safe... they said if I complained to you, you wouldn't love me anymore..."
Daniel wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her so tightly his muscles strained. He looked over her shoulder at Ashley, who was pressed flat against the pantry door, trembling from head to toe.
"Get out," Daniel commanded quietly.
"Daniel, listen to me, Mom and Michael just thought—we were just helping—" Ashley stammered, tears springing to her eyes as survival instinct kicked in.
"I said, get out," Daniel repeated, raising his voice just enough to rattle the glass jars on the shelves. "If you are not out of this kitchen in three seconds, I won't just throw you out of this house. I will strip every single asset, every credit card, and every luxury vehicle I provided, and leave you with the exact amount of money I had when I started this business: zero."
May you like
Ashley didn't wait for a second warning. She scrambled past them, hiking up her designer skirt, and bolted out of the service kitchen toward the main house, her footsteps echoing frantically down the corridor.
Daniel gently stroked Emily’s tangled hair. "It's over, baby," he whispered against her ear. "You're never washing another dish in this house as long as you live. Let's go upstairs."
