Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastThe heavy oak doors of Michael’s private study locked behind us with a satisfying click.

As soon as we were alone, the impenetrable armor Michael wore for the outside world seemed to crack. He exhaled a long, slow breath, running a hand through his dark hair, loosening his bowtie, and tossing his suit jacket over the back of a leather armchair.

“You didn't have to humiliate Rossi like that,” I said softly, standing near the massive stone fireplace where a gentle fire crackled, casting dancing orange shadows across the emerald silk of my dress.

Michael stopped, turning slowly to look at me. His gray eyes were dark and intense. “Rossi needed to understand his place. And more importantly, everyone in that room needed to understand yours.”

“They think I’m a gold-digger who trapped a mob boss,” I murmured, looking down at my shoes.

“Let them think whatever they want,” Michael replied, closing the distance between us in three long strides. He stopped just inches away from me, the heat radiating from his body chasing away the chill in the room. “What matters is what we know.”

He lifted his hand, his thumb gently brushing against my cheek, tracing the line of my jawline with a tenderness that defied his brutal reputation. My breath caught in my throat, and my eyelids fluttered shut instinctively.

“Aurora,” he whispered, his voice rough and low, vibrating right against my skin. “From the moment I saw you in that restaurant—holding a frying pan, bruised, terrified, yet somehow standing like a queen ready to protect my son—I haven't been able to think about anything else.”

My heart hammered like a drum. “Michael...”

“I know this started as a joke,” he murmured, his thumb moving to brush my lower lip. “A six-year-old’s fantasy. But I’ve never been a man of half-measures. If you want out—if the danger, the rumors, and this world are too much—I will clear your name, give you half my fortune, and set you up anywhere in the world where nobody will ever find you.”

I opened my eyes, staring up into his fierce, honest gray gaze.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't running. I wasn't hiding behind motel doors or dodging debt collectors. Standing here, wrapped in the protection of a man who commanded empires, I realized where I wanted to be.

I reached up, my hand resting gently against his warm chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic thud of his heart.

“And if I don't want to run?” I whispered.

Michael’s eyes flared with a sudden, blazing heat. Without another word, he cupped the back of my head, tilted my face up, and pressed his lips fiercely against mine.

It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was an explosion of months of tension, unspoken desires, and raw, undeniable chemistry. His lips were demanding, warm, and intoxicating, and as my arms instinctively wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer, every fear I had ever harbored melted away into ash.

When we finally broke apart, both of us breathless, Michael rested his forehead against mine, a genuine, breathtaking smile breaking across his stern face.

“Then God help anyone who tries to take you from me,” he murmured against my lips.

Little did we know, the enemy was already inside the gates.
