Chapter 4 - The Dinner Party of PredatorsThree days passed in a gilded blur.

The wardrobe consultant Elena had supposedly hired turned out to be an army of high-end stylists who practically turned my closet into a luxury boutique filled with silk gowns, designer jeans, and bespoke jewelry. Zach treated me like actual royalty, dragging me around the massive estate to show me his secret Lego room, his pet turtle, and his collection of comic books.
And Michael? Michael was a paradox. He was attentive without being smothering, powerful without being overtly cruel in front of me, and infuriatingly observant. Whenever he looked at me across the dinner table, I felt like a puzzle he was slowly, meticulously learning how to solve.
But paradise in the Moretti household didn't last long.
On Friday evening, Michael informed me that we were hosting a mandatory private dinner party in our honor—an official introduction of his new fiancée to the inner circle of the New York syndicate and allied corporate elite.
“They’re going to tear me apart,” I whispered, standing in front of the master bathroom mirror while staring at my reflection in a breathtaking, backless emerald silk gown that hugged my curves like liquid glass.
Michael stepped out of the walk-in closet, adjusting the cuffs of his tuxedo shirt. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me.
His gray eyes darkened, sweeping over the dress, the diamond teardrop earrings resting against my collarbone, and the way my golden-blonde hair fell in soft waves over my shoulder. For a second, the cold, ruthless billionaire vanished, replaced by a man who looked like he wanted to burn down the world just to keep me warm.
“They won't dare touch you,” Michael said, his voice deep and absolute. He walked up behind me, resting his warm, heavy hands on my bare shoulders. His reflection towered over mine in the glass. “Because the moment anyone at that table disrespects you, I’ll remind them why my family rules this city.”
“You make it sound like a war zone,” I murmured, leaning back just an inch against his chest.
“It is,” he replied honestly. “Tonight is about power, Aurora. They will test you. They will look for weakness. Do not give them an inch.”
Ten minutes later, we descended the grand staircase into a dining room that looked straight out of a European palace. Crystal chandeliers cast a dazzling glow over a long mahogany table surrounded by twelve powerful men and women—bankers, shipping magnates, and underworld bosses wearing million-dollar smiles and ice-cold eyes.
As Michael led me into the room, every conversation instantly ceased.
Twelve pairs of predatory eyes locked onto me.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, straightened my posture, and pulled my shoulders back. I wasn't the terrified, hiding girl in the Brooklyn restaurant storage room anymore. I was standing beside Michael Moretti.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Michael announced, his voice echoing smoothly across the room as he pulled out my chair at the head of the table. “May I present my fiancée, Aurora Vance.”
A heavy, suffocating silence hung in the air for three agonizing seconds.
Then, a slick-looking man with slicked-back hair and a diamond pinky ring—Vincent Rossi, a notorious Manhattan real estate mogul with deep mob ties—let out a dry, condescending laugh.
“Vance?” Rossi smiled, swirling amber whiskey in his crystal glass. “As in Regina Vance? The bankrupt gambling addict from Brooklyn who was hawking her dead brother’s daughter to settle her debts with Tony Marcone?”
The entire room sucked in its breath.
My blood ran ice cold. My cheeks burned with instant, agonizing humiliation. Rossi had deliberately exposed my deepest, dirtiest secret in front of the entire elite syndicate to humiliate me and test Michael’s control.
I froze, my fingers gripping the edge of the mahogany table so hard my nails dug into the wood.
This is it, my mind screamed. They see right through you. You’re just trash from Brooklyn playing dress-up.
I started to stand up, ready to run out of the room, when a heavy, warm hand firmly landed on my shoulder, pressing me back down into my chair with absolute, immovable authority.
Michael Moretti didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his fist on the table.
He slowly turned his head to look at Vincent Rossi, his gray eyes turning into two frozen bullets of pure death.
“Vincent,” Michael said, his tone dangerously casual. “Let me educate you on something about my future wife.”
Rossi’s smile faltered slightly under Michael’s terrifying stare. “I was just making conversation, Michael. Everyone knows—"
“Everyone knows,” Michael interrupted smoothly, leaning forward over the table, “that Tony Marcone is currently feeding fish in the East River because he forgot who he was talking about. And everyone knows that Regina Vance is currently serving a ten-year sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary for fraud and extortion because my legal team handed the district attorney her entire financial history on a silver platter yesterday morning.”
Rossi’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. The crystal glass in his hand trembled.
“As for Aurora’s past,” Michael continued, his voice dropping into a lethal, echoing whisper that silenced every heartbeat in the room, “she survived a snake pit of parasites like Regina. That doesn't make her weak, Vincent. That makes her a survivor. And anyone at this table who ever speaks her name with disrespect again will find out very quickly what happens when you test the Moretti family.”
The silence in the dining room was absolute. You could hear a pin drop on the Persian rug.
Michael slowly straightened up, turned to me, and offered a gentle, reassuring smile that instantly melted the ice in my chest.
He raised his glass of champagne. “To my fiancée. The smartest, strongest, and most beautiful woman in New York.”
One by one, trembling hands reached for their glasses, and the room murmured mechanical, terrified congratulations.
May you like
But I didn't care about them anymore. I looked at Michael, realizing with sudden, terrifying clarity that the fake engagement we had started with a pinky promise in a basement storage room had just crossed a line into something far more dangerous.
I was falling in love with the most feared man in America.
