“You threw away eight months of negotiations and a multi-million-dollar platform just like that?” Cassandra asked quietly, breaking the silence as the kids became engrossed in building blocks. “That company was your entire life, Damon. Everyone in the industry knows how badly you wanted that neonatal tech.” I looked up from the floor, where Violet was trying to place a wooden block on my head as if it were a crown. “I wanted it because I thought building things could fill the empty spaces,” I answered honestly, walking over to stand beside her at the window. “I lost my sister because our family couldn't afford advanced neonatal care when we were growing up. But I was so busy trying to save hypothetical babies in future hospitals that I walked right past my own flesh and blood sitting twenty rows behind me in steerage. I am not letting you, or them, slip through my fingers ever again.” Cassandra’s eyes searched mine for any trace of the arrogant, hyper-focused workaholic she had fled years ago, and for the first time, the defensive wall around her shoulders softened just a fraction.
