Chapter 4 - The Safe House and the Secret

Five hundred miles away from the freezing chaos of Chicago, the air was warm, smelling of salt water and blooming hibiscus.
The small, secluded coastal cottage on the cliffs of Maine was hidden behind a thick wall of pine trees, accessible only by a private dirt road that appeared on no modern GPS map. It was a modest place—nothing like the sprawling marble and glass estates Ethan favored—but it had solid wooden floors, a stone fireplace, and a deep wraparound porch overlooking the crashing Atlantic waves.
I stood on the porch, wrapped in an oversized cable-knit sweater, holding a steaming mug of black tea.
My laptop sat on the wooden table beside me, its screen displaying a live, encrypted satellite feed of the Carter Capital boardroom in Chicago. I watched the silent, frantic movements of Marcus Vance and the cold, furious posture of Ethan through the hidden security lenses I had installed in the boardroom three months ago, anticipating that I might one day need to watch my back.
A soft knock sounded at the front door.
I turned and walked inside. I unlocked the heavy oak deadbolt and pulled the door open.
Standing on the porch was Dr. Sarah Jenkins, an old university professor and my closest confidante, holding a large cardboard box filled with medical supplies and secure communication hardware.
“You look entirely too calm for a woman who just stole forty million dollars from a billionaire titan,” Sarah said with a warm, knowing smile as she stepped inside out of the cool breeze.
I stepped back, helping her carry the box to the kitchen island. “I didn't steal anything, Sarah. That money was placed in my care by a man who knew his grandson would eventually need a lesson in humility.”
Sarah set the box down and turned to look at me, her expression turning serious. She reached out, gently placing her hand over mine. “And how are you holding up? The physical stress of the travel... the emotional weight of it all?”
I looked down, pressing my hand against my stomach, feeling the faint, reassuring flutter of life beneath my sweater. A soft smile touched my lips.
“I’m stronger than I ever was, Sarah. For three years, I let myself shrink to fit inside Ethan’s world. I let him make me feel small, invisible, and replaceable. The moment I heard him say my absence wouldn't even interrupt his schedule, the illusion shattered. I’m not running away. I’m protecting my child from a man who only knows how to possess things, not love them.”
Sarah nodded approvingly. “And his security team? Have they found any trace of your route?”
“None,” I replied calmly, walking over to my laptop and tapping the keyboard to close the live feed. “I used a burner frequency to ping my phone near O'Hare before dumping it in a cargo bin headed for Anchorage. By the time Ethan’s private investigators realize I drove a rented electric vehicle across state lines into Canada and flew in from Montreal under my maiden name, weeks will have passed.”
“And when he does find you?” Sarah asked, her eyes sharp. “Because a man like Ethan Carter doesn't stop until he reclaims what he considers his property.”

I walked over to the front window, staring out at the vast, endless ocean where the horizon melted into the gray sky.
“Let him try,” I whispered. “When Ethan finally tracks me down, he won't find a desperate wife begging to come home. He’ll find a woman holding the one thing he can't buy, bully, or manipulate his way out of.”
