Chapter 7 - The Sweetest VictoryOne year to the day after Julian’s disastrous 40th birthday pool gala, the desert heat was beginning to settle over Phoenix once again, turning the evenings into a warm, velvety paradise.

Instead of standing in a crowded, tense backyard surrounded by fake friends, shallow sycophants, and a condescending husband, I stood on the private rooftop terrace of my newly purchased penthouse overlooking Camelback Mountain.

The terrace was lit by hundreds of delicate fairy lights strung through lush potted citrus trees and blooming bougainvillea. Soft acoustic jazz played from hidden speakers.

Surrounding me were the people who truly mattered: my glowing, happy children playing safely with a basket of wooden toys; my trusted nanny and close friends who had supported me through the darkest trenches of my life; and a small circle of brilliant, supportive colleagues from Apex Financial who celebrated my success rather than trying to dim my light.

I wore a breathtaking crimson silk slip dress that caught the evening breeze, my hair framing my face in effortless elegance, my lips curved into a genuine, radiant smile.

Marcus stepped out onto the terrace holding two glasses of chilled sparkling cider, walking over to hand one to me. He and Selina had divorced six months after the scandal, and Marcus had spent the last year quietly working to repair his relationship with his family, earning a modest, respectful place in my children’s lives as a doting uncle.

“To one year of absolute reinvention,” Marcus toasted softly, clinking his glass against mine.

“To peace, truth, and never looking back,” I replied, taking a crisp sip of the cider.

As I looked out over the glittering expanse of the Phoenix valley, sparkling like a million diamonds beneath the desert night sky, I thought back to the woman who had stood on that stage twelve months ago—exhausted, blood-stained, and trembling with humiliation.

I had swallowed my pride that night not to surrender, but to load the cannon.

I had taken the worst moment of my life and turned it into the foundation of an empire built entirely on my own strength, intelligence, and unbreakable resolve.

Julian was a ghost of a past life—forgotten, irrelevant, and buried beneath the weight of his own hubris.

And me?

I wasn't just surviving anymore.

I was ruling the kingdom.
