Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary at Mount SinaiBy 4:15 AM, the convoy glided into the private ambulance bay of Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan.

Dr. Aris Vance—the chief of pediatric oncology—along with four senior specialists and two hospital administrators, stood waiting at the glass doors in immaculate white lab coats, looking nervous and deeply respectful as Kieran stepped out of the Maybach.
Kieran held my hand firmly in his broad palm, guiding me down the quiet, sterile corridors of the fourth floor.
When we pushed open the door to Room 412, the quiet hum of the heart monitor filled the room.
Lying inside the small hospital bed, wrapped in a pink fleece blanket, was my four-year-old Clara. Her dark hair was thin from the treatments, her small cheeks pale, but her dark eyes fluttered open as the soft light from the hallway spilled over her bed.
"Mommy...?" Clara whispered, her small voice raspy and breakable.
Tears of pure, weightless joy flooded my eyes as I rushed across the linoleum floor, dropping onto my knees beside her bed, pulling her tiny, fragile frame gently into my arms. "I'm here, baby. Mommy's here."
Clara rested her little head against my shoulder, her wide eyes drifting past me toward the tall, broad-shouldered man standing in the doorway.
Kieran stood motionless near the threshold, his six-foot-three frame silhouetted against the hall light. The feared mafia boss looked down at the tiny, fragile girl holding onto me, his severe, carved features softening into a look of profound, breathtaking tenderness.
Clara pointed a small, thin finger toward him. "Mommy... who is the big prince?"
I let out a breathless, tearful laugh, looking back at Kieran.
Kieran walked slowly across the room, stopping beside the bed. He dropped onto one knee flat on the hospital floorboards, bringing his massive frame down level with her small eyes.
"My name is Kieran, little one," he murmured softly, his deep baritone rich and gentle. "And I'm here to make sure you get all better."

Clara reached out her small hand, her tiny fingers curling around Kieran's large forefinger.
Kieran looked down at her tiny hand holding his, then looked up into my hazel eyes. The quiet, unshakeable promise shining in his gaze told me that my daughter's fight was no longer a solitary battle—it was a war backed by the sovereign power of the Blackwood family.
