Chapter 1 - The Sovereign’s CageThe silence inside the mahogany-paneled study fell like lead.

Dominic Ashford did not move from behind the polished surface of his grand desk, but his storm-gray eyes—cold, sharp, and terrifyingly intense—never left Vivien’s face. The dim light filtering through the tall arched windows highlighted the hard angles of his jaw, the pristine cut of his dark tailored suit, and the absolute lack of warmth in his posture.
"How do you know that?" Vivien repeated, her voice cracking under the weight of panic and sheer exhaustion. She pressed her back against the heavy double doors, her hands instinctively clutching her midsection.
Dominic slowly rounded his desk. His movements were fluid, deliberate, and entirely predatory, like a wolf closing the distance between himself and cornered prey.
"I know because I own the private security firm that monitors every medical facility in South Boston," Dominic said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that sent a tremor straight down her spine. "I know because the moment your name hit the patient intake system at that clinic, my automated alert flagged it. And I know because Dr. Vance—the physician who gave you that ultrasound—answers directly to the Ashford Syndicate."
Vivien felt the air leave her lungs in a sharp gasp. "The syndicate... You're mafia."
A bitter, ghost-like smile touched the corner of Dominic’s lips, though his eyes remained frozen. "The media calls us an international trade cartel, Vivien. The federal government calls us organized crime. But in this city, we are the only law that matters."
He stopped two feet away from her. Up close, the scent of expensive cedar, rain, and faint tobacco wafted off him—the exact same scent that had intoxicated her six weeks ago on the wind-swept terrace at the Crane Estate. But there was no romantic charm left in him now. Standing before her was the undisputed king of New York and Boston’s dark underworld.
"You had no right," Vivien choked out, tears of fury burning behind her eyelids. "You abandoned me in a hotel room! You left no name, no number, nothing! I was alone, drowning in debt, trying to figure out how to survive!"
"I left you a business card with a direct line on the nightstand," Dominic countered, his gray eyes narrowing slightly. "Along with key access to my private residence."
Vivien blinked, stunned. "What? There was no card! There was nothing on that table except an empty champagne glass!"
Dominic’s posture went rigid. A subtle, lethal shift occurred in his demeanor. "Then someone removed it before you woke up."
Before Vivien could process the terrifying implication of his words, Dominic stepped closer, reaching out a long, bare hand. His fingers didn't touch her skin, but held just millimeters away from her stomach, as if he could feel the faint, invisible heat of the three tiny lives growing inside her.
"Three, Vivien?" Dominic asked, his voice dropping into a register so dark and soft it made her heart hammer against her ribs like a trapped bird. "You are carrying three Ashford heirs."
"They aren't heirs!" Vivien cried out, flinching away from his hand. "They are my babies! And I was terrified! I can barely afford rent! I eat cereal for dinner because I have six hundred dollars in my bank account! How was I supposed to bring three children into the world alone?!"
Dominic's eyes flashed with a sudden, searing mix of anger and something raw that looked suspiciously like pain.
"You were never alone," he growled softly, stepping so close her chest brushed against his jacket. "And you will never eat cereal in a cold apartment again. You are under my protection now. Every debt you owe has already been cleared as of ten minutes ago. Your lease in South Boston has been terminated. Your belongings are being packed by my staff as we speak."

Vivien’s breath hitched in her throat. "You can't just buy my life!"
"I am not buying your life, Vivien," Dominic whispered, leaning down until his lips almost brushed the shell of her ear. "I am securing it. Because my rivals just learned you exist. And in my world, a woman carrying the bloodline of Dominic Ashford is the ultimate target."
