Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

The safehouse was a grand, secluded estate hidden deep within the dense pine forests of Lake Forest, miles away from the neon noise of Chicago. Surrounding the perimeter were stone walls, security cameras, and armed guards patrolling the grounds in silence.

Dominic carried me inside the grand foyer, not setting me down until we reached the warmth of the massive stone fireplace in the library.

My hands were still shaking violently, wet with rain and cold sweat. I collapsed onto the plush leather sofa, clutching the yellow envelope like a lifeline.

Dominic disappeared for a moment, returning with a glass of dark amber whiskey. He pressed it into my hands. "Drink it."

I took a small sip. The burning liquid cut through the numb terror in my throat, warming my chest. Dominic pulled off his wet suit jacket, tossing it onto a chair, unbuttoning his collar. Beneath his crisp white shirt, the shadow of dark tattoos crept up his neck—symbols of the Russo family lineage and power.

"The envelope," Dominic said, stepping closer, his presence commanding the entire room. "Open it."

With trembling fingers, I broke the wax seal on the yellow envelope. Inside was a single folded sheet of paper and an old key with a brass tag stamped with the number 314.

I unfolded the paper. Gemma's erratic, messy handwriting filled the page.

Clara,

If you're reading this, Dominic has probably already dragged you into his mess. I'm sorry. I found something in Father's old ledgers—something that proves someone inside our inner circle has been selling our shipping routes to the Moretti family for months. It wasn't just business, Clara. They're planning an assassination on Dominic at the annual Founders Gala next week.

I took the master hard drive and ran. I'm hiding at the old boathouse in Geneva Lake. Key 314 opens the safe in the basement.

Don't trust anyone, Clara. Not even Dominic's generals.

Love,

Gemma.

Silence hung in the library like a heavy fog. I read the letter twice before slowly looking up at Dominic.

He was standing right above me, reading the letter over my shoulder. His jaw was set so hard I thought his teeth might shatter. A terrifying, absolute coldness settled over his handsome features—the mark of a Don realizing his kingdom was infested with rats.

"A traitor," Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously smooth. "In my own house."

"She was trying to save you," I said softly, standing up from the sofa, holding the letter out to him. "She didn't run because she was reckless, Dominic. She ran to protect you from an ambush."

Dominic took the paper, but his eyes never left mine. "And you came running into a war zone to save her."

"She’s my best friend," I said simply. "I don't have anyone else."

Dominic stepped closer, reducing the space between us to nothing. He reached out, his warm, heavy hand cupping the back of my neck, his thumb tracing the sensitive skin beneath my ear. The intense, possessive heat of his gaze pinned me in place.

"You have me," Dominic said, his voice dropping into an intimate, velvet command. "From the moment you stepped into my sister's apartment, Clara, your life ceased to belong to anyone else. I will burn this city to ash before I let anyone hurt you."

May you like

My breath hitched in my chest. I should have been terrified. My mother’s warnings should have been screaming in my mind. But as I looked up into the dark, resolute eyes of the most dangerous man in Chicago, I didn't feel afraid.

I felt safe.
