Chapter 4 - Margaret’s UltimatumBack in Manhattan, the grand limestone townhouse on the Upper East Side—the ancestral home of the Harrison family—was draped in a heavy, suffocating silence.

Margaret Harrison sat at the head of the formal dining table, untouched porcelain teacups resting before her. Across from her sat her only son, looking like a man who had been dragged through a war zone. Daniel had spent the last forty-eight hours running between federal prosecutors, corporate defense attorneys, and frantic board members trying to stem the bleeding of a stock plunge that had wiped thirty percent off Harrison Freight’s market valuation in two days.

“You did this,” Daniel hissed, slamming his fist against the mahogany table. “You knew where she went! You helped her plot this entire execution!”

Margaret didn't flinch. She slowly raised her teacup, took a measured sip, and set it down with a soft, deliberate clink.

“I helped her?” Margaret asked, her voice dripping with icy, maternal disdain. “You drove her into the cold, Daniel. For seven years, I watched you treat that brilliant, beautiful girl like a piece of office furniture. You brought your whore to high-society galas, paraded her in front of our peers, and expected Amy to smile and applaud from the sidelines like a trained pet.”

“It was business!” Daniel shouted, standing up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the Persian rug. “Vanessa was an asset for the midwestern expansion! I gave Amy everything she ever wanted—money, status, security!”

“She didn't want your money, you arrogant fool,” Margaret snapped, her eyes flashing with a fury that mirrored my own. “Her father left her more wealth than this family generated in two generations. She didn't need your empire, Daniel. She needed a husband. And instead, she got a narcissistic boy playing corporate warlord.”

Margaret stood up from the table, smoothing down her black wool dress. She walked over to Daniel, looking him dead in the eye with a gaze that stripped away every layer of his polished armor.

“The board is convening an emergency vote at nine o’clock tomorrow morning,” Margaret said quietly. “They’re stripping you of the CEO title. They’re replacing you with an interim director appointed by Amy’s estate trust. And as for your mistress? She’s currently cooperating with federal investigators to save herself from a ten-year federal prison sentence for wire fraud and industrial espionage.”

Daniel staggered back a step, the color completely draining from his face. “No... no, the board wouldn't do that. I built this company from the ground up!”

“You built it on the foundation of your father-in-law’s initial capital and your wife’s silent compliance,” Margaret corrected him coldly. “And now, that foundation has been revoked.”

She turned and walked toward the double doors of the dining room, pausing just before she crossed the threshold.

“If you have an ounce of sense left in that hollow skull of yours, Daniel, you won't chase her,” Margaret said over her shoulder. “Because if you find her, she won't be the meek, quiet wife you left behind in Manhattan. She’ll be the woman who legally dismantled your entire life before you even realized you were standing in the ruins.”
