Chapter 4 - The Exile of the DynastyEvelyn Mitchell took a fast, clumsy step backward, her manicured hand coming up to cover her mouth as her face turned an ugly, mottled shade of paper-white.

"Triplets...?" my mother whispered, her voice cracking into a high, frantic squeak. "Ryan... you... you have three children?"
"And one of them," I continued, my voice trembling with a raw, agonizing fury, "is sitting in Room 412 right now, fighting for her life because her heart valve is failing. While you were planning a champagne party to merge two real estate funds, my daughter was dying in a bus shelter."
Charles Mitchell cleared his throat, his authoritative posture crumbling into a frantic, groveling posture as he took a step toward me. "Ryan... son... listen to me. If there are heirs... if there are Mitchell grandchildren... we must move them immediately! I will call the chief trustee of the bank! We will transfer them to a private penthouse in Gold Coast! We will hire ten private nurses—"
"You won't do anything, Charles," I interrupted softly.
My father blinked, startled by the cold, absolute distance in my tone. "What... what do you mean?"
"As of eight o'clock tonight," I revealed flatly, "I resigned from my position as Chief Executive Officer of Mitchell Development. I transferred my primary voting proxy to the board's secondary trustee."
Charles let out a strangled, horrified gasp, clutching his chest. "You... you resigned?! You gave up the firm?!"
"I spent ten years building your dynasty, Dad," I answered, looking straight into his bloodshot eyes. "And it cost me three years of my children's lives. I am taking my personal savings, my independent private trust, and my wife... and I am walking away from you forever."
Amelia let out a high-pitched, hysterical scream, picking up the diamond ring from the marble desk, pointing her finger at my face. "You're crazy! You're throwing away billions of dollars for a woman who lived in a run-down apartment in Queens?!"

I didn't answer her. I didn't even look at her.
I turned my back on my mother weeping hysterically in the lobby, turned my back on my father clutching his chest in total defeat, and walked down the quiet corridor toward Room 412, leaving the Mitchell dynasty in complete, unadulterated ruin.
