Chapter 4 - The Safe House in GreenwichThe rain was coming down in sheets by the time the black sedan swept past the iron security gates of the Pellegrini safe house tucked away in the heavily wooded hills of Greenwich, Connecticut.

It wasn't a drab government safe house. It was a massive, stone-and-glass modernist mansion surrounded by two acres of pine trees and private security patrols. But to me, it felt like a gilded cage with a very heavy lock on the outside.

I paced across the heated hardwood floors of the master suite, clutching a cup of black coffee that Joseph’s men had handed me upon arrival, while my phone buzzed continuously with ignored calls from Amanda.

The heavy oak door of the suite clicked open.

Alexander stood in the doorway. He had shed his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and his dark hair was slightly damp from the rain. He looked like a man who had driven eighty miles an hour through a hurricane because his world was spinning out of orbit.

Our eyes locked across the room.

“You idiot,” Alexander said, his voice raw and shaking with a fury that was entirely masked by his terrifying stillness. “You walked out of an armored vehicle in downtown Manhattan because of your ego?”

“My ego?” I threw my coffee mug down onto the table, the ceramic shattering against the wood as hot liquid splashed across the surface. “I walked out because you treat me like property, Alexander! You track my movements, you intercept my dinner plans, and you surround me with armed thugs every time I try to breathe normal air!”

Alexander crossed the room in three long, predatory strides. Before I could back away, his hands caught me by the shoulders, pulling me flush against his chest with a force that knocked the wind straight out of my lungs.

“You think I do this to control you?” he demanded, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate intensity I had never heard before. “Vance subpoenaed your records today, Clara! The moment I saw that motion filed in federal court, I felt like someone had driven a knife through my ribs. If they get to you—if they use you to force a plea deal—I lose everything. I lose you.”

His words hit me like physical blows. The anger drained out of my body, leaving behind a shivering, trembling vacuum.

“I’m just an assistant, Alexander,” I whispered, tears finally breaking over my lashes. “Why do you care so much?”

Alexander’s hands moved up, framing my face, his thumbs wiping away the moisture on my cheeks with a reverence that contradicted the violence humming beneath his skin.

“An assistant?” he murmured bitterly, his dark eyes burning into mine. “Clara, you run my life. You hold every secret, every code, every vulnerable corner of my empire in your hands. But more than that... from the very first day you walked into my office six months ago, looking like you wanted to murder me with a stapler because I asked you to redo a spreadsheet... you ruined every other woman in the world for me.”

My breath hitched. The air in the room seemed to vanish entirely.

“Alexander...”

“I didn't want to feel this,” he confessed, his voice dropping to a rough, broken whisper as his forehead rested against mine. “In my world, caring is a death sentence. It’s a weakness my enemies will exploit. That’s why I tried to keep it strictly professional. That’s why I bought you that dress and watched you from across the room like a starving man staring through a restaurant window.”

“You were jealous,” I whispered, remembering the way his eyes locked onto Joseph on the dance floor.

“I was losing my mind,” Alexander corrected fiercely. “And if another man ever touches you the way Joseph did, I won't just stop the music. I’ll make sure he never walks again.”

It was toxic. It was possessive, dangerous, and utterly terrifying.

And as Alexander’s lips finally descended upon mine, capturing my breath in a deep, consuming kiss that tasted of scotch, rain, and absolute surrender, I knew I was already too far gone to save myself.
