Chapter 4 - The Fall from GraceThe ballroom descended into absolute, unbridled chaos.

Senator Collins immediately stood up, pushing his chair back with a sharp scrape, turning his back on Table One as two city police commissioners pulled out their mobile phones. The hospital board chairman was red-faced, screaming at his public relations officer, while photographers swarmed the perimeter of the stage, their flashes creating a blinding, chaotic strobe light.

"Get your hands off me!" Adrian roared as Ethan's security team firmly pinned his arms behind his back, forcing him down toward the marble floor. "Do you know who I am?! I am Dr. Adrian Vaughn! I saved the Mayor’s daughter! You can't do this to me!"

"Dr. Vaughn," a deep voice cut through the noise.

Two uniformed NYPD officers, accompanied by a detective in a trench coat who had been stationed near the VIP entrance, pushed through the crowd of shocked donors. The detective pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Adrian Vaughn," the detective announced, his voice flat and practiced, "you are under arrest for felony domestic assault, battery, and coercion."

"This is a setup!" Adrian shrieked, his voice pitching high and pathetic as the steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He struggled against the officers, his silver hair falling into his eyes, his pristine tuxedo rumpled. He turned his head frantically toward the stage, his eyes locking onto mine with feral desperation. "Ava! Tell them! I made you! You were a nobody until I took you in! I'll ruin you! I'll make sure you never work in this state again!"

I stood near the curtain, my body trembling violently.

Then, a warm, solid presence stepped between me and the flashing cameras.

Ethan had walked off the stage. He stood directly in front of me, his broad back blocking the sight of Adrian being dragged through the double doors in handcuffs. He blocked the flashing lights, the shouting reporters, and the stares of five hundred strangers.

Without saying a word, Ethan unbuttoned his midnight-blue tuxedo jacket, slipped it off his shoulders, and wrapped it gently around my trembling frame.

The heavy, warm wool smelled of cedarwood and rain. It draped over my navy dress like an impenetrable fortress, shielding the high lace collar, shielding the bruises, shielding the broken pieces of my spirit.

"Are you okay?" Ethan asked quietly, looking down into my eyes. His hands rested on the lapels of the jacket near my shoulders, warm and steady.

"He... he’s going to hire the best lawyers in the state," I whispered, tears finally breaking through my eyelashes, cutting tracks through my makeup. "He has millions, Ethan. He has the hospital board, the politicians—"

"He had them," Ethan corrected gently. "Past tense. By midnight, every medical board in the country will have those photos. By sunrise, his accounts will be frozen pending investigation into his private foundation. He is done, Ava."

Ethan took a half-step closer, his gray eyes shining with an intensity that made my breath catch.

"I told you earlier," Ethan murmured, his voice meant for my ears alone. "You said he was someone I couldn't punish. I told you to try me."

I looked up at him—at the billionaire who had spent eleven months quietly watching me from across a mahogany desk, respecting my boundaries, hiding his own heart to keep from becoming another weight on my shoulders.

"Why?" I choked out, a sob rising in my throat. "You destroyed a ten-million-dollar gala. You ruined your company's biggest night. Why would you do that for me?"

May you like

Ethan reached up, his thumb gently catching a stray tear on my cheek. His touch was so feather-light, so incredibly soft, it made my heart ache with a feeling I had been too terrified to acknowledge for a year.

"Because, Ava," Ethan whispered, "I've been in love with you since the day you walked into my office."
