Chapter 2 - The Deed to the BistroDavid’s hands shook so violently he dropped his leather ledger onto the floor. "Mr. Vance! Please! I can reinstate her immediately! I’ll double her salary! I’ll make her the head server for the VIP dining room! Miss Megan... please tell him!"

I slowly stood up from the floorboards, my body shivering from the rain and the lingering adrenaline. I held my ruined apron against my side, looking at David—remembering how he had ignored my desperate pleas for my sick five-year-old son, how he had mocked my dedication, and how he had thrown my final paycheck into the dirt.
"I don't want your job, David," I spoke cleanly into the quiet kitchen. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried an unyielding, velvet clarity that echoed off the stainless-steel walls. "I just wanted enough money to buy antibiotics for my son."
Roman turned his head slowly toward me. The lethal, freezing glare in his eyes melted instantly into a deep, intense, and reverent warmth as his gaze swept over my pale face and shivering shoulders.
He reached out his broad, calloused hand, gently, carefully wrapping his fingers around mine. His palm was warm, solid, and steady as granite.
"What is your son's name, Megan?" Roman asked softly, his deep voice filling the quiet kitchen like a gentle blanket.
"Leo," I answered, my throat tightening as tears finally burned behind my eyelashes. "He's five years old. He has an ear infection, and he's at home with my neighbor."
Roman turned his eyes toward his chief lieutenant, a tall, sharp-eyed man named Victor.
"Victor," Roman commanded flatly. "Have Dr. Sterling go to Megan's apartment immediately. Bring the finest pediatric antibiotics, a private nursing team, and ensure the boy has everything he needs."
"Consider it done, Don Roman," Victor bowed respectfully, stepping out through the service exit while pulling his phone from his coat.
David took another panicked step forward, holding his hands up in a groveling plea. "Mr. Vance... please! The restaurant has a full house tonight! The mayor's chief of staff is sitting at table four! You can't cause a scene here!"
Roman turned back to David, reaching into his inner suit jacket, pulling out a sleek black leather folder bound by gold seals.
He threw the folder flat onto the prep table directly in front of David’s sweating face.
"Read page four, Kesler," Roman commanded softly.
David’s trembling fingers opened the folder, his eyes scanning the certified commercial deeds and corporate ownership transfers stamped by the Cook County Land Registry at 4:00 PM today.
The red numbers lit up the parchment:
MASTER PROPERTY DEED: Executed under Vance Commercial Holdings LLC.
ACQUISITION OF LAURA BISTRO PARENT COMPANY: One hundred percent equity buyout completed three hours ago.
TERMINATION OF MANAGEMENT: David Kesler is permanently relieved of all executive duties, effective immediately.
David’s jaw sagged open in utter, disbelieving horror. "You... you bought the restaurant...?"
"I bought the building three hours ago," Roman corrected cleanly, taking my small, shivering hand into his, placing it firmly over his broad forearm. "And twenty minutes ago, while I was sitting in my car having my ribs stitched up, I bought the entire restaurant brand."

He looked at David with a cold, absolute victory that shattered the last lingering piece of the manager's pride.
"You're fired, David," Roman declared. "Pack your coat and get out of my building."
